Okay. Time for a technical question. :mixed-smiley-010:

I'm running Win8 64bit OS, which should give FSX 4 Gb of VAS.

How can I determine how much of VAS is consumed by FSX, and if possible, the individual components such as scenery addons and ai flightplans? And if possible, how can I determine how much additional VAS is used up when I load a particular aircraft??

I'm assuming there is an addon software out there that would help measure and track memory, but I'm looking for something straightforward and simple. My old noodle can only take so much information. :biggrin-new:

Thanks in advance

I don't think anything will tally up all addons. But I use Process Explorer to see how much FSX as a whole adds up to:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

When you install it you'll need to right click the header bar (the blank space next to items like Process PID CPU), and then click "Select Columns." Then select the Process Memory tab then check Virtual Size.

That value is the VAS for all your programs. I just run the program while in FSX and watch it go up up up!

I found and installed Process Explorer this morning. Thanks for the info on what to look for.

I'm encountering OOM errors on one payware aircraft (out of the hundreds) and trying to determine the before and after VAS usage whenever I activate the one gauge that triggers the memory issue.

Although my addon scenery and other FSX settings likely consume most of the memory, I'd hate to turn things down just for one addon. Whatever data I can collect and compile for the developer will (hopefully) contribute to solving the memory issue.

All of what Ryan mentions should already be accessible via the built-in task manager/performance tab, then resources at the bottom. Then go to the CPU tab. Right click the EXE to select monitor settings/views. The same can be done under the memory tab.

I think in your case based on what you're saying, a flight sim specific type, gauge/modules monitor would be more beneficial in narrowing the source. Otherwise you're seeing a overall rounded consumption.

Correct.

It would be nice to know the memory consumed by each component loaded by FSX (i.e., scenery, weather, traffic, specific aircraft), and even a specific module or gauge. Better yet if it can track load history over time so you can see how the memory usage changes when a particular gauge is activated.

At the moment I'm just exploring what's available and seeing if any of the reported results are worthwhile.

Update. I just sent the results to the developer.

I tracked the VAS through several steps such as loading FSX, selecting the specific aircraft, turning on other gauges and start, and finally activating the gauge in question.

The last step resulted in a VAS jump of over 1 Gb or better than 25% of my remaining VAS of 4 Gb. (3.029 Gb to 3.996 Gb VAS consumed)

Very interesting.

Before loading the sim for flight the VAS jumped fro 1.27 Gb to 2.25 Glb consumed which I will assume to be 1 Gb overall for standard weather, ORBX scenery, at traffic and the based aircraft itself.

With the amount of testing you're doing, you'd be a good candidate for any beta team IMO.

My assumption about using the default Task Manager is a nogo from what I read. So it sounds as if you're going about things correctly if you want to narrow things down.

When a developer says the problem is with my install and not their product, I do tend to get a little fired up. LOL

It's nice to have this data now for further discussions.

The one feature that is missing is the ability to record spikes in VAS over time so one can see how it varies. I had to go to FSX window mode and go back and forth between apps to record the numbers.

It's now possible to see how changing variables within FSX and how different aircraft loads affect VAS. I'm not about to do it now, but its possible.
