Virtual Desktop

SOH-CM-2023
Due to my link cable (tried three including a two new ones) not working, I've been delving into Virtual Desktop again for DCS.

Can someone explain in simple terms how this works - my understanding is:

You connect your computer to your router by ethernet, then connect your headset to wifi. Wifi 6 is preferred, I am using a Quest 2 and a TPlink router.

I do get occasional good results using just wifi. But some modules like the CH-47, Tomcat and Phantom produce very low FPS, while the Viggen, F-15 and F-16 are not bad at all, about 50FPS.

I want to change this set up to be more reliable and better - but before running a cable I need to see how good it can be before making the effort worthwhile.

I assume if my computer is connected to an access point in the same room via ethernet it shouldn't be connected to wifi since it has the ethernet cable plugged in and it's not necessary. My computer then sends the data through the cable to the router which sends it back to the headset via wifi 6.

Let me know your setups!

I'm just a 2D guy using TIR4! So I can't really help... From what I've heard some guys talk about in our group they need a specific router to go without the link cable. But that's all I know. Sounds like you have the router?

Sorry, no help here. I'm still on my monitor and link to router via WiFi ?. (I don't want to discourage DCS Forum participation, but a number of the guys over on the MSFS2020/24 forums use VR headsets.)

Thanks, I sort of figured it out in the end - it actually works very well, with a couple of quirks - F10 map view ruins FPS, but alt tab out and back gets it fluid again at 60FPS. Far more than I was getting with the link cable. Turns out $24 for Virtual Desktop app and a £30 TPLink AX1500 was all I needed to improve my experience with the Quest 2.

Oh and the difference in P3D which I fly to get my Blackbird fix is night and day! Not tested MSFS 2024 much yet, just enjoying the moment!

Just finished building a "new" computer [cpu box with fixings]. Went with Ryzen 7 9700X, B650 M/B, DDR5 RAM, Op Sys on an M2, etc. I'll end up with my RX 7900XTX in this box. Is VR the way to go for us flight simmers? How do you see your hands to manipulate switches, keyboard and other other things?

I use the mouse to flick switches, and the small gap between my nose and headset to view the keyboard for keyboard commands - its not ideal, but I could never go back to 2D - its just so immersive, even if the resolution isn't as great as a monitor. I started with a Rift CV1, and now have a Quest 2 which after dialling in some settings is just great. I think there are options for gloves of some kind, so if money is no object, it could be possible.

Previously the feeling of being 'in' the cockpit of something I made was simply mind blowing. These days I don't make 3D models anymore, but I still think back to the games I grew up with, Gunship, F-19 Stealth Fighter, A-10 Attack and Janes F-18 and think about what we have now and its mind blowing.

I tried Virtual Desktop previously but gave up, this time though I was more successful. My link cable and airlink option broke so was forced to properly look into it! But the result is pretty outstanding.
