so, my stepson calls me into the room a couple weeks ago, and says "the anti virus thing popped up, what do i do?" of course, the browser was no longer open by the time i got there. since then, i could not disable autoplay on my computer, and i installed tweakui and now it doesn't autoplay. however, i cannot play a disc of any kind now, the thing locks up. i tried trend micro housecall, nothing. my own a/v (norton) finds nothing. i tried booting into safemode but then my a/v will not run. i had to look for the exe through explorer, and once i found it, it wouldn't start. my computer is getting agonizingly slow, sometimes pages won't load until i refresh them a couple times, system idle process is using 98% of my cpu all the time according to task manager. i would like to fix this myself. right now isn't a great time to go spending $$ at the computer repair guy's office.
anyone have an idea?

everytime i re-start i am getting a search window that pops up with an empty folder in it called unist_iess.exe

i tried deleting the folder but the search window still comes up.
no matter what i do, adaware refuses to not start when i start the computer, even though i have removed it's start registry with ccleaner. i tried the a-squared thing last night. it did find alot of stuff, but other than the computer picking up a little speed there are no other changes. i will try the other stuff today and see how it goes. the boy will not be using the computer for a while, that's for sure.

Your issue aounds very much like a Root Kit and they can be buggers to get ride of, mainly because the set themselves up to load before the OS and well ahead of any AV, or Malware utilities, this allows the little buggers to block most attempts to remove them effectively. The best solution I have found for that type of infection is to use something like Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows, and run scan and cleanup utilities from the boot CD, that way you can scan you entire system without having the malware loaded and you have a good chance of cleaning it out.

Just do a google search for Untimate Boot CD for Windows and you will find many links. The only thing you will have to remember is you will have to build the boot disk and that means you need to start on a clean system with an original Windows CD to use for the build. It does take a little time, but is well worth the effort.

The current version is 3.51 I believe, and you can download an up-to-date AV Signature file for most of the free security apps that are included, that way you will be able to detect the latest nastyies.

Good luck with cleaning up, I have to do my son's computer tomorrow so I knwo what you are going through.
