Warbirdsim P-51D-5-NA - two 20th FG paints nearly done

Here are two 20th FG D-5's from late 1944; Lt Thomas Doody's 'Cathy Beloved' from the 55th FS and Capt Charles Hamme's 'Kitty and Bunny' from the 79th. Some artwork for 'Cathy' is courtesy of Mark Styling from his excellent Aircraft Illustration website (http://www.markstyling.com/index.htm) and both use a new P-51D_2_t bump map kindly supplied by John Terrell. This removes the vent holes both sides of the nose; according to John this was an option applied to many Mustangs, including both these, to increase carburettor air heating. Any comments would be welcome. The lettering for 'Kitty' appears to be that which was used on many 20th FG Mustangs - yellow and pea green, but if anyone knows different please let me know!

Happy New Year to all!

Beautiful work Dave, I will be downloading as soon as available. Thanks for the link to the illustration website.

very nice!
I have one question however.
It looks as if you still show bare metal between the black pianokeys on Kitty, but as you ca see here: there was clearly white between them, as well as the remnants of the original white band behind the black band:

as for the color, I was under the impression that most nose art in the 20th FG was red and yellow, not green.

as for Cathy:

it looks as it they indeed did not paint white between the black bars.

I don't remember the source but I know I've read the green and yellow were commonly used, as in Ernest Fiebelkorn's 'June Nite'; however, I don't much like it personally and would prefer red/yellow. As to the white background, you may well be right, though my initial interpretation was that it was missing, based on the darker exhaust shroud panels. But thanks for your help, will modify.

The book "the Warlords" on the 4th, 20th and 55th FG's mentions yellow and red for Kitty, but I have not found any other references to colors.
As for the white, Cathy shows dark steel panels, so no white, while Kitty does not have the dark plates, so with white would b my guess.
Looking forward to adding them to the stable, I love 20th FG Mustangs.
