Waypoint 1

I am having a blast so far. BHaH is so good I could write pages about the things I love. Just tangled with about 6 EIIIs that jumped our squadron of Bristol Scouts as we left for a patrol. Great fun!!

Anyway...

Maybe it is just my bad luck, but waypoint 1 on many campaign missions is often a very strange place...many many miles off in the complete opposite direction to the mission target. Selecting optional missions usually replicates the problem...different target and waypoint but similar illogical location of Waypoint 1. It seems to happen more with squads near the front and with missions far behind enemy lines.

Is anyone else seeing this kind of thing on a regular basis? Just curious.

Yep. Happens to me all the time. I dont like using warp all that much so I try to fly with squads that are near the front. And I get that 1st waypoint way off in left field. But its good to cover more area anyway, so I go along with it.

Thanks Rooster.

Yah, if I warped I wouldn't mind, but I like to fly the whole mission so fifty mile detours get a bit old.

It isn't a huge problem, but maybe Winder will find some time (circa 2012?) to have a look at the waypoint code and see if it needs a minor tweak.

Guys AI Navigation is being worked on see known issues. Waypoints etc will be looked in in that process.

On the positive side, when you're flying miles deep into your own territory then turn around to head towards your destination, your plane is lighter from the burned off fuel, therefore when ya get jumped you'll have a bit more maneuverability with that weight gone, lol. Plus, it gives you a chance to make sure your squadron is all together.

It's a good thing that we have alternate missions. I've had a couple missions where the destination was beyond the range of the aircraft. Easy to hit Alternate Target and move on.

Scout,

Is this with escort missions? I noticed on escort missions the map shows a path from the originating field of the bombers to a rendezvous point on the way to the target.

Hi Scott: Nope...actually the waypoints on the escort missions don't have the problem (that I have seen), as the wayoints are usually nicely midway between takeoff and target.

Ah sorry thought you meant the take off first waypoint is usually opposite to the mission? or do once you take off and circled the field the next main waypoiny is miles off?

Alternative target should resolve yes, as to why you see the odd one I don't know, you have English US OS ? Overclocked PC? Also try a scandisk on the drive holding OFF, just wondering if some data files are damaged.

Guess I didn't explain very well (my specialty, haha). More info...

It is always the waypoint labelled '1' on the mission briefing (big green map).

Example, if you are German squad near the front and target is 50 miles into France, then Waypoint 1 will be 50 miles in the opposite direction from the airfield. (i.e back to Germany)

I will try to post a sample screen-shot or two.

p.s. It only happens in certain situations so is not a big deal.

If you don't want to have to hit all the waypoints you can hit Shift + W to select the next waypoint. This is handy if you get into a fight and use up fuel and ammo and need to cut the patrol short. For example I had a Pfalz mission to attack an observation balloon that had about 3 waypoints in a round-about course to make the approach on the balloon. On the way there were a couple of RE8's about to bomb an airfield. Couldn't have that. After attacking the RE8's we still had to get that balloon so shift+W twice and we were warping directly to the target from our present position. If you had a long patrol with several waypoints and you got into a scrap early on and used up fuel and ammo and maybe took a little damage, in real action you would probably head for home. Shift+W until you can't anymore and you are on a direct route back to the airfield from wherever you are. It gives you the option to make decisions on how approach the mission depending on circumstances which is much more realistic than doing a patrol to hit all the waypoints regardless. I have to admit I use it quite a lot.

So if I hit Shift-W my flight leader might then head directly to the next way point? (I don't use warp)

That will be a good fix if it works. I'll experiment.

Edit: Can't seem to make this work. Shift-W doesn't change the direction the flight leader is heading (checked using the TAC). Must I be flight leader to advance the waypoints?

Screenshots (hope they work), just to show what I am seeing.

These are all optional flights from the same mission briefing. If you cycle through many optional flights, then a reasonable mission often eventually comes up that doesn't require flying an excessive distance (i.e. that a non-warper like me can fly in a reasonable amount of time).

Hello 77Scout
Shift-W won't change the waypoints on your flight. It just changes which waypoint you will go to next if you are warping. For a non-warper I would say you can choose your own course to your target destination.
