Weird crashes

I'm running CFS3.1 in Windows XP 64 bit and I keep getting random inexplicable crashes in the middle of gameplay. I don't ever get an error report and when I go to restart the game I get the message "CFS did not shut down properly the last time it was run." Then it asks to view troubleshooting but it's just Microsoft's standard error list page. I don't get it.

usually that happens when an aircraft without a sound file or a pylon/weapon missing is called up

does it happen in a mission, qc or a campaign?

(I had that once when the fan on my video card packed up and it got too hot after 10 min or so...)

It happens in all modes. I turned down my graphics settings and played again to see if it was the graphics strain on my card, but it still crashes, so maybe it's the missing file thing. How do I fix it?

I understand your install never worked properly....(?)

if its definitely not overheating and all modes always crash its difficult to get closer. Are you sure your pylons and weapons folders are there and all the aircraft have sound folders with wav files or a link?

(I am already thinking of a re-install, although I hate that)

somebody else has an idea, may be? :isadizzy:

Yeah, weapons/pylons/sound files and folders all exist for each aircraft. Will attempt reinstall.

Okay this sounds weird, but I didn't reinstall and ran CFS3Config for the first time, and played for a significant amount of time and have yet to crash. Could that have fixed it?

If the add-on aircraft has a weapons or pylons folder, the content should be copied to CFS3\weapons and CFS3\pylons to be found by the game engine.

Did you crash the game while using all-stock items (clean P-47D vs clean Bf 109G in clear weather morning quick combat over Dijon, for instance) ?

Before running Config, yes. No mods, clean ordnance. I even did just a free flight with a clean P-38 and it crashed. But now everything works fine. Did I just need to run CFS3Config? Was it that simple? :blind:

Apparently not, because now it's crashing about 20 seconds into each mission.

OK, I did a clean uninstall/reinstall, and lo and behold it asked me what my install language preference was (which did not happen the first time I installed) so I figured everything was all right. Now it's doing the same thing, crashing on every flight no matter what mode. This is really pissing me off.

Can someone please help me?

Sounds a bit like overheating. Does the same thing happen with other games?

No, just CFS3.

EDIT: I tried turning down the graphics level to 3 (instead of 4 that I had been running) and everything is fine now, no more crashes. Does that mean I WAS overheating?
