What default planes can be deleted?

I'm fairly new to FS9 but familiar with CFS1, 2 & 3. I am beginning separate installs for FS9 and would like to know which default unnecessary planes I can remove (with any associated files), say for a pure military jet install. etc.,

Thanks for any help.

You can delete every plane except the C172

Once you load in your own planes

Start a new flight save it and make it the default flight.

Now you can remove the C172 with out a problem.

I would move them to a drive for storage you may want them later

On a clean install their should not be much else you need to dump.

Good Luck

It is a a good idea to delete all of the flights that come with FS9, as they are flown using the default aircraft.
Unless you plan on onstalling after market AI you will find your ramps are very bare unless you keep the assorted Boeings.
But you can delete everything except for the C172.

actually, you can delete all the default planes, even the 172. Just make sure you select another plane as the default first. I don't have any default planes installed and haven't had a problem for over 3 years. :)

however, use a "simple" plane as your default. This way the memory stays cleared. I use the Chipmunk myself.

some notes before you remove the planes:

- some other planes might be using their gauges. So save them out to another folder, just in case you need to use them
- their sounds also get aliased (especially the DC-3 and the Lear). But that's an easy solution. Either save the sounds or find a different sound source.
- if you use the default AI (which is not very good btw), then you can't remove the default planes, since it uses the same models.

...I would move them to a drive for storage you may want them later...

Because you may need the sound files from default aircraft. I got rid of all my default aircraft, except for the C172, and couldn't figure out why the AS C-141 sounded like a Cessna...the sound is aliased to the 737.

I know rookie mistake, but it happens :icon_lol:

Unless you have a hard drive that's really hurting for space, deleting any of the default planes won't save you much. The entire Aircraft folder in a fresh install is only 441 MB. Deleting just the modern planes will gain you a measly 273 MB.

Personally, I never fly any of the modern defaults, but once in a while, I enjoy cranking up one of the vintage planes. I especially like the Ford Trimotor with its animated external contol cables and levers. The oldies are also included in the stock AI, so it's sort of like finding an "Easter Egg" when you land at a small airfield and find one of them sitting on the ramp.

yup, the Jenny, Ford, Piper Cub and the DH Comet are actually
pretty fun to fly around in.

You can actually have a "hanger" setup if you want...but be warned, it gets sorta complicated, but here's a simple method:

- make a new folder in root of FS9 called Aircraft_Vintage, and put all your 1900-1930s planes in there
- make another called Aircraft_50s so on so on
- now make a batch file on your desktop called Plane Picker or something....
- in that batch file, make a prompt which allows you to select which era you want to fly in, and then launch FS9. On closing FS9, it'll rename the folder back.

so why do this? it can greatly reduce load time.

Downside is that if you want AI, then the AI has to be in every folder...

anyways, complicated, but fun to mess around w/ FS9's open structure...my fs9 is setup so "weird" now days...but it loads crazy fast (within 10 seconds with 300+ planes installed) and runs butter smooth....
