What do I need for racing

What do need to do the racing in this section of SOH? What software do I need? tell me where to get started
 
We don't do any racing in here, we mainly talk about it , both real and simulated.(Though we did have a small competition some time ago.)
Most of us have one or more of these sims: GTR2, GTR Evolution or Race07, GT Legends or rFactor.
 
Sadly no; I think rFactor is the cheapest of the bunch though you could probably find some of the older titles listed above in the bargain bin for a few dollors/pounds/Euro's. rFactor costs $34.99, but if you look at all the free add-ons here: http://www.rfactorcentral.com/index.cfm it's not that expensive IMHO.

Looks like the official sites of GTR2 and GT Legends are offline, but you can easily track down the demo's at Google. Gamershell seems to have both.
The rFactor 'demo' is basically the full game, but you have only limited access to cars and tracks and only for one hour. After this hour you can either buy or uninstall the game. There's no demo for GTR Evolution, but I think there's one for Race07. (GTR Evo is basically Race07 with multiple add-ons in a box)

Hey All,

If you only bought one racing game which would it be and why? Which has the most adjustibility? Any game have NASCAR, WRC and sports car racing in one? F1, IRL and Indy - not that concerned about.

I'm thinkin I may go down this road. Never bought a wheel and pedals but might - real planes have a stick and with auto rudder don't need pedals so that's what I've lived with.

Ed, for me it's rFactor.
Best sim for open wheelers and for you, an excellent platform for NASCAR with a number of online leagues running rFactor based NASCAR series.
The 'American Muscle' add-on can serve as a reasonable representation of 1970s NASCAR types as well.
I'm constanly amazed at the quality of the free additions available from the enthusiast developers.

I also run GTR2 but only for the LMP and GrC Le Mans series.

You would do well to invest in a wheel and pedals at some stage, as a 'stick' isn't intuitive enough. The much loved (by most!) Logitech MOMO is readily available at discount prices, as it has been replaced by their G25 set.

You could give the BMW Challenge a run, it's a promotional exercise for BMW but it is a good 'taster'.
Can't recall the url right now but it's the program we used a few months back for our little 'in-house' competition.
(At which I sucked!)

Thanks Wombat! I was thinking that likely rfactor would be the one to get. I'm going to look hard at it.

As for wheel and pedals - likely momo.
