This happen right down the road from our house >> http://www.dailypress.com/news/hampton/dp-nws-boating-accident-20100705,0,732453.story It blows my mind how a parent could let a seven year old child drive a boat and not have anyone right beside the child at all times. Hampton Creek is narrow with loads of piers and boats. You just can't fix stupid and this kid has got to live with this for the rest of his life because some parent didn't use common sense.

There is not a seven year old anywhere capable of operating a boat, and the adults that were letting hims hould have some serious charges against them,

While Virginia law disallows those under 16 to operate personal watercraft without having taken a boating safety course, there is no such law regarding boats.

I figured PWC would be handled the same as boats... I don't think there is a distinction here in TN.

(EDIT - oops - there is. Rules are the same, but they are distinct vessels. 12 and over can operate if an adult can take over immediately, and 16 without adult if they have taken the safety test and are carrying proof.)

It doesn't need to be a kid, and it doesn't need to be in restricted waters...

After watching a fireworks display...
Speculation the houseboat may not have had lights...
anyone want to estimate the powerboat's speed?
(at night? with other boats in the area? on a holiday long weekend? in spite of a Federal law requiring operator's licenses?)

Rules? Common sense? That's for wimps and sissies... this is about fun! Besides, what harm could there be? Yeah, right

A tragedy that should not have happened.

Here in Ohio, anyone born after January 1981 must have taken a course on water craft safety and have proof of such course with them when they are piloting any water craft. We found that out on Memorial Day weekend when our nephew, Donnie, and his wife, Ashley, were piloting our brother-in-law's wave runners and were pulled over by the Water Police. Luckily, the water cop was an old school friend of Donnie, so he let my brother-in-law off with a warning....since the water craft belonged to him, he is the party responsible for ensuring that who ever pilots the craft has taken the safety course....the fine for allowing a person born after January 1981 to pilot a watercraft without the course is $150.

Agreed. Not good sense.
And this kid has to live with the fact he killed his own mother for the rest of his life.
That's a pretty heavy burden to bear for a 7 year old child.
