Hope those panels didn't go into the intake!
Nah. You can see the panel in the up position if I zoom in on the pics. And, he made a safe landing.

These pictures were taken this afternoon at the Olympic Airshow at Olympia, WA (KOLM). I watched as the F/A-18 preflighted. He moved to the otherside of the runway to complete his preflight, only to return after a few minutes. That was when the crewmen accessed the panels on both sides to replace a green canister of some kind. They actually swapped it from their backup F/A-18.

After he took off he started his demonstration over the field with a couple of fly-bys. Then he circled the field for about 30 minutes before landing. No fire trucks, so no emergency was declared.

I was disappointed there was no complete demonstration, and just figured something broke. I didn't realize what until I looked at the pictures I took. My guess is that the crewman didn't secure the panel and it popped open during the beginning of his demo. He flew slowly to keep it from ripping off is my guess.

A green pressure bottle would be the O2 bottle. Strange that it wasn't found to be low before taxi... very weird actually.

WH, you probably didn't miss much. There haven't been any Navy flight demos worth watching since the F-14's were retired. ;)
