What kind system does it take to run FSX at 30 FPS

I am going to buy a computer to run FSX. I want to crank the sliders up on the game. I am thinking intel i7 920 CPU computers. I am and old hand at FS-9 and now I want to make the change to FSX and I don't want to buy something that can't get it done. If you are running FSX, sliders up, let me what system you are using. All info much appreciated

Bit of a diversion, as it doesn't really answer your question as to spec; if you are guying a new PC then consider seriously having the new Windows 7 OS on it - all the indications are that this a vast improvement on Vista, so may actually help overall performance regardless of spec, apparently it runs FS9 as if it were "on 'roids", as somebody said elsewhere!

I have a Intel Q9550 overclocked to 3.4 ghz and it runs at 36 with high to max sliders. I would go with the i7 now though, it's so cheap anymore. Get a decent video card but it doesn't have to be a monster.

There are at least three folks in here who are actually qualified to give you the best info on this. . .they are:
Ted, Harleyman and a new member isidious9. They are all in the business of building computers and have guided many on here in their quest for the perfect system.

If you want to fly low n slow outside of the largest cities, a system like that guy above with his Q clocked to 3.4 should be fine

But if you want to fly NYC, FEX, UTX, Ultimate Traffic, PMDG 747 etc, then you'll want a i7 920 or 950 overclocked to 4.0+

Hi..

While the new X58 I7 will future proof you for newer sims and games..

It really has no advantages over socket 775 running a quad for FSX IMO...Except for higher ram usages..(more money)

I have built many systems for FSX with the Q9650, oced to 3.4 or 3.6 and they run FSX at 35 locked smooth as silk..

They are a tad cheaper to build then the i7 core ..But not by much.

Typically built you are looking at under 2 grand...and can get by as low as around 1,650 possibably..

Just remember...NO system will run FSX flawless at all sliders right over big cities, flying heavies, with lots of weather and traffic..but there are good compromises to be had there too ...

I was going to say.. Liquid Nitrogen cooling system, 4 8-core chips, dual graphics cards, dual 1TB high RPM HD's, Win7 OS 64, 32 Gigs of the fastest high performance RAM, and 'maybe' you will get full sliders....

maybe...

Yes, there is a computer that can hold 32 Gigs of Ram. But its an Apple G4 or G5. Intel chips though. Yes, it can run Win7 on it. They do not have liquid Nitrogen cooling though (fictional?) nor the highest performance chips and GC's...

I would also add another video card that I have found to be extremely fast and the graphics are astounding and it comes in under the $260.00 mark for video cards. I am testing the new bios for it now.

This system runs a solid 33-36 fps with all sliders right, default traffic at 100% GA 70% Airliner, clouds at max, medium traffic at airports (with default traffic) over NYC, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, 29-32 over Tokyo.

It ran best with 6GB Corsair Dominator 1600 mhz DDR3 memory(a little wonky with OCZ) and Win7-RC 64bit

Ted

BTW these were true fps according to FRAPS not the wonky frame counter you get by pressing CTRL-Z
