What to do with aircraft that you have a better version of?

I've kind of had this German jet thing going for a little while here, and lately it's been the Heinkel He 162. I've had the Wings of Power one for a long while now, just hadn't done much with it as I was having problems landing it. So, I got the now freeware AlphaSim one, found a bunch of paints by Morton for it and gave it a whirl. It flies nice, but the VC is rather lacking. But all was not lost. It works great as AI and with Morton's paints for it, I was able to field a squadron of 'em (well seven of 'em anyway)

Got this shot at Merc Air's secret HQ, where they came in from Templehof for a few drinks at the Cantina.

A nice relaxed atmosphere over at Merc Air HQ. Is that the flight line chief in the lawn chair? Between launches I guess... :icon_lol:

Willy,

good call, the AS Salamander has two LOD's, making it pretty suitable for AI with low FPS impact. Surprisingly the only plane from the WOP bombers and jets pack that has Multi LOD is the Ta183 Huckbein (3 in fact).

Hoping to see them in your next screenies, lol.

A Quick Tour

Here's some more pics of Merc Air's secret HQ.

1) A couple of hangers on the commercial side of the base.

2) Not sure what this guy's job title is at Merc Air, but he's always out on the base checking out what's parked where. Head valet? I want his t-shirt though. The hat I've already got.

3) Looking at the commercial side from the Cantina parking ramp.

4) The Cantina Parking ramp. Right now the Luftwaffe is in for a visit, a few drinks and getting friendly with the dancing girls.

5) A Ju 52 that flies in a few times a day from the continent. I think it hauls in the kegs of beer for the Cantina.

6) The duty CAP flight between patrols.

He's the "Air Boss", Willy. That's the only thing I can come up with given the fact that he has a Coleman lantern sitting on top of his cooler. The Binoculars, ICOM IC-A23, the cooler and the magazine are one thing, but the lantern....?

I recently attended a presentation by a retired USAF officer at the museum in Torrance,CA , who in his late teens flew the 162 for the Luftwaffe out of the factory fields. He ended up getting shot down in one of them by a P-47 who got the jump on the unarmed jet during climb out.
He came stateside after wars end and when the Korean war started he flew with the USAF.

The long and short of the 162 however was that for various reasons it never really matured. Almost every airframe was different than the one before it. No two actually flying the same.
The wooden wings changing in dihedral, camber etc with almost every airframe as the factory tried to tame the technology.
One major issue turned out to be the quality, or lack thereof, of the glue used to manufacture the wings and attach them to the fuselage. One of his friends was killed when the wings simply came off the aircraft in a 1.5G turn.

It's mosquito repellant burned in the Coleman. Better than the spray on stuff.

Cheers
Stefan
