Whats True, Whats not?

Whilst occupied by the Luftwaffe the airfield was heavily bombed by the 12th USAAF operating out of North Africa, reducing the dirigible hangars to skeletons.

I always read that only the U.S. used blimps in WWII, What does the above mean?
I also found a WWII Italian designation as Airship Helmsman, and a Russian site with pictures of German Blimps in WWII.

I found this researching Elmas in Sardinia, where the U.S. took over the dirigible landing base and used it as thier own and while researching Lecce in sothern Italy ?

Anyone have more info?

seems to be a bit of a contradiction, aye?
unless the hangers were built pre-war,
but that's just speculation.
sorry, i've got no facts.

Milo,
I did not want to post the entire article, but the mission was to take out the dirigibles while they were in "Port". I even have a picture of Elmas in Sardinia 1940 as a " Blimp "
port. I use that with caution because I get tired of typing in "dirigibles". I am sure someone will grab and go with all the differences of airships, I am a one finger typist and do not want to spend the time with the silly stuff. The point is, why would the Italians have a rank for it, a pin for it and hangars for them?

Then why a mission to attack them ?
