When the Royal Navy had real carriers and planes to fly from them, great footage.

Now that it looks likely that our 2 new carriers will be shelve'd, this really brings a tear to the eye.
enjoy, ian

Good old fossil-fuel-burnin' CV's with centerline elevators, JP-5 in the fresh water and no a/c in the berthing spaces! :d

Good find Ian, some fabulous shots there.

Ship is HMS Hermes. H on the aircraft tailplanes and R12 on the island.

Thanks for posting the links to both clips. Most interesting, I have forwarded them to a couple of friends already. :ernae:

Cool find ! Question...The flight deck crewmen holds up a board with: Brakes Off, Cockpit Check, and Blow On. What the heck is " Blow On " ?

So, it looks like that little glass enclosed fox hole that the cat shooters hide in now on US carriers was also a Royal Navy idea! Its a dam shame the navy that invented all the innovations that make the carrier what it is today don't have any more carriers themselves. That was good footage. The RN planes of that era had style. Except for that tall fat prop one. That one's a bit on the fugly side. :icon_lol:

PRB, depends what you call style, the Fairey Gannet AEW had a style of its own, twin turbo prop engines each driving one of the contra props 1 engine could be stopped and its prop feathered to give a good loiter time, I like it. There was a AS version first armed with torpedo's and various other load outs a good bit of it in a internal bomb bay the AEW followed it

Had Ark Royal been around at the time of the Falklands war I think that war would not have happened

Ian , Bloody Brilliant , guesss its time to get the Scmitar out , been a few years but that Alphasim model really is a goodie .. Skysims Vixen - should querry that and see if Rick is going to upgrade it .

Sorry should have said there is a FSX anti submarine Gannet available at Classic British Files. This is the Carrier Onboard Delivery model

The pilot of the Buccaneer towards the end of this video I believe was RAF on a familiarisation trip, think he had 5 goes before landing on, there were 2 I think RAF pilots on that trip, the other was lucky and had a Royal Navy pilot in the back seat to talk him down and made it first go I think. This I believe is a extract from the BBC series Sailing covering Ark Royal's last voyage
