I started a campaign in a french sqadron in Alsace. Please accept my ignorance as I did not note down the escardille number, it was very late last night. I chose a skin of one of the aces. Here is what it looked like:
I started the first mission. It was an airfield attack. OK the CO must be joking. Airfield attack in a Neup 11!!! OK no questions asked, OFF you go people.
The airfield is surrounded by high ground and forest. I wait to watch the other flight take off to see if the AI will manage to get past the obstacles. They manage very nicely and we take off as well on our way to our target. The scenery is spectacular. Just look how dense the forest is. You also see the odd cottage surrounded by trees close to small lakes or ponds. It's idyllic. I can't really believe a war is on until I get to the front line and the flak starts. The flak effect is blilliant. I have selected realistic sound effects and the engine sound actually covers most of it but the sound of the "thud" of the flak explosion if it is close still frightens you. I haven't tried the other option but I think I'll stick with the realistic sound set, I like it.
On reaching the target area a flight of 3 EIIIs shows up flying lower and on the same direction with us. They haven't seen us yet. I order my wingmen to attack and we jump on them from above. I target one of them and let loose of my Lewis gun. The lack of a gunsight in the N11 causes the first tracers to fly above him and he takes notice of our presence. I correct my aim and a few shots land on his wings before he breaks and I overshoot. The N11 is a better turner though and I quickly get on his tail again. We have reached the deck and we fly above the treetops. While trying to line up with him again I realise I'm taking hits from one of his wingmen. Well, they didn't loose time at all. Taking advantage of the agility of the Neuport I manage to avoid the wingman and during the turning fight that ensues I manage to get hits on at least two EIIIs. One of them finally takes a plunge into the trees. One more is left far behind me but I realise that my ammo is expended. I rush towards our lines and manage to escape and after a nice sightseeing ride reach our base and make the very interesting downhill approach above the treetops.
I admit I chose a rather quiet era and a superior plane (at least to the current adversary) to make my debut. Still the EIIIs seem to be much harder to get than in Phase 2. Time permitting I'll try other eras as well.
Thank you again OBD.
