Win 7 Ultimate and FS9...some questions

My new system is together and running. I am now super ready to see what FS9 is like on a mega-power PC with a killer graphics card. I have some questions:

Can I just yank the 500gig SATA out of my old system and stick it in my new one without having to format....the 500gig has all my sim stuff on it.

Do I have to install FS9 in Win 7 to run it....does it need to be in the registry file to run?

Where do the hidden FS9 config files go in Win 7....the ones that are in the User/Documents and Settings/App Data/Microsoft folder thingie?

You will have to install FS9 from the CD/DVD into Windows7. It is very important that you DO NOT install it into the default folder, which will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\....

Windows 7 has special protection over the program file folders. You should create your own program folder (on my system, C:\MyPrograms\Flight Simulator 9). It is also a good idea to make sure that your security settings on that folder are set to "Full Control".

Disable UAC for the installation process - you can enable it again afterwards.

You will, unfortunately, have to re-install any payware stuff that has license files, or special registry entries.

In Windows 7 the user folder stuff goes here:

C:\Users\{username}\Appdata\..etc (I think - not at my FS machine at the moment)

Good luck!

I don't have to worry about payware stuff....I have very few payware planes, and those that I do have do not have the registry file thingie going on.

I was hoping that I would not have to do an install in Win 7 since I have 3 installs of FS9 that are highly modified and heavily stocked with planes. I suppose I could do 3 installs of FS9 in Win 7, to D drive (I keep all my sim installs OFF the OS drive....D drive is now a 1TB drive) and copy my modified installs into the new FS9 folders....I have one for GA, one for Vintage Military and one for Modern Military.

Just curious

Hi OBIO -
I am heading down much the same path as you, but still in early planning at the moment.
I asked this around a few forums:- 'Purely in terms of an OS for running FS*, would Win7 Ultimate do anything for me that Win7 Home Premium x64 wouldn't?'; the general view was that it wouldn't as the top two versions are aimed at corporate & big server customers.
Didn't get round to asking here, but I would appreciate your views on the point.
Cheers

Obio,
Just plug the drive in, no need to reinstall. One of the nice things about fs9 is it will run as is from any drive. Once you start fs9 it will add the needed files back into Documents & Users folders. If you need the registry string added back there is a freeware tool at Flight1 (might be at Avsim to) site that will add the string to the registry. I know this work as i have my original install on a drive that is now 8 years old, (when fs9 was new) and has been moved 2 times to different drives.

I yanked the 500gig sata Sim Drive from my old system and plugged it into the Sata Port up on top of my new system's case. Copied my scenery folders and one of my installs to the new ITB sim drive. Tried to run it. It would not run. So I did a single install of FS9 from the disc....just to get it into the registry and to place the hidden config files so I could go in and find out for sure where they are supposed to be. Once I did that and placed my tweaked config in the proper place...my install fired up with no further hichups. And ran like a cat with its tail on fire!

I went with Win 7 Ultimate since it had the increased ability to run XP programs...and I really need to be able to run a number of programs to do the tweaks, mods, and skins that I do for planes. Without them...I'm out of business.

Does Ultimate run my sims better than Home Premium....I have no idea. I have only run my sims on old computers with XP and my new one....so I really can't give you a comparison between 7 Home and 7 Ultimate. But I don't think you would see a sim performance increase between Home and Ultimate.

Hey OBIO, as much as we all love your awesome enhancements to our sport, now sounds like a good time to take a little time to actually enjoy the fruits of your labor and fly around abit in your new environment.:wiggle:

Thanks for that - cleared up a couple of points.

It took some getting used to. I bought a PC that had Win 7 Home Premium installed. After installing FS9 and FSX both I found that the new machine runs FS9 quite well, with all the sliders ramped to the right, but not FSX. The graphics on the machine: ATi 7200 with a Gig of memory, make FS9 look real pretty and it runs like butter, but FSX is still a bit jerkey in heavy urban sceneries. I believe Win 7 helps FS9 run faster, as well as having an AMD Quad Core Processor.

The memory is upgradeable to 18GB if I so desire, and it does have an AGP Slot, if I so desire.

I gotta warn ya' tho, don't delete the little brown bag wrapped "installer" boxes out of your Aircraft Folders in the sim. With Win 7, it'll crash your FS program really quick.
