Windows 7....again

Guys,

Sorry to be rehashing this subject again but my XP finally went to that great PC junkyard in the sky. I'm looking at an HP with an i3 processor, 8 Gbts RAM. Does anyone know if Win 7 Home Premium or Win 7 Pro is the better option for CFS2 or does it not make a difference?

Manfred,

But either way I would still have to install outside of C:\Windows\programs x86 to get full admin control such as C:\Windows\Flight Sims correct?

CW, if you're working with a super-sized hard drive capacity you can create a separate partition (D drive) for all the games and sims. Or you can install another internal drive for this purpose. Either way, this allows you to bypass most admin issues specific to system drive operations and programs when your flight sims are active. I wouldn't even go with with the C:\Windows\Flight Sims approach at all. Just hook up another drive or partition and get the sim off of the system drive.

My rig has gone through some changes over the past year and i don't currently have Win7 64 installed, but this setup has worked well for me in the past. However, i still disabled UAC to prevent any unexpected unpleasantness with the program activity of the MS civie sims in the User folder. Even though these programs were also installed on my G drive along with CFS2 and others, they still read and write to files on the system drive in the User directory which UAC monitors heavily.

Yes, that is correct. Best way would be to have FSX installed on it's own hard drive, separated from your Operating System (OS).

BTW, do make sure to get the 64bit version!!

So would running the game from an external USB 1Tb drive that I use for backup also work? I already have a copy of CFS2 saved there.

Please don't quote me but I don't think running off an external is a good idea. I'm not sure if it would work right anyways. I think there would be some frame rate issues among other things. I could be wrong but I have had these issues with other software.

Unless other, untrusted people are using your computer, go to control panel and turn of User Account Controls (set slider to zero). Multiple installs of CFS2 run fine for me in Win 7 from the "C" drive. :applause:

For what it's worth,I've been running BOBII ,First Eagles ,ROF,and a few other games from a 2TB external HD (Seagate) for a few years now with no problems(knock on wood). My CFS2 install is on my c drive but not under program files and with UAC off.

OK here we go...
Win 7 Pro
8Gbts RAM
I3 core Processor
Running CFS2 in c:\windows\program files (x86), not in XP mode, UAC on...

Everything is working properly. FPS higher slightly higher than with XP rig, little bit of pink color in fonts but I can live with that.

Tried running 4gb_patch EXE, get run/don't run, click run, opens up all files, click Dism Host (only other EXE file there) get "couldn't open exacutable".

Does anyone know how to run this patch in Win 7 Pro?

Have you tried the Fix that we use for XP. it has to do with the font type. i forget what you have to do. i believe it has to be set to normal. or something like that.

I can live with the pink font, but with the new rig the FPS is up slightly over my old XP and I think the 4Gb patch would help but I can't get it to run on Win 7 Pro

Turns out that patch is already installed in Windows 7 Pro for all programs. I've been getting up to 83 FPS on light cloud sky and some slightly better than the old XP rig while in combat. I am running the onboard video card. I'm not sure my motherboard will accept a plug in but I will check when I get some time. But beware of this... if you have a Realtek soundcard built in that has the HD Audio Manager, and run a subwoofer like I do in my simpit, it sounds like a gangsta mobile in the hood... all bass and no mids. And there is no EQ on the sound manager to make it better. Might have to check on a plugin soundcard as well. Oh well, live and learn!
