Windows Auto Update.... Eeeks!

Lionheart

SOH-CM-2014
Well, this morning, a window kept popping up stating my computer was going to reboot to install new updates. I had this off. I have no idea how it came back on. I sweated bullets on this. I couldnt figure out how to turn it off and keep it from installing updates.

so............. I let it happen...

72 Different system updates..... Sweat shooting out of my forehead, all I could do was think of how many times this happened to Mike (Hey Moe) and it erased his HD...

Then, after many min's of stressful stairing and wild imaginations, it was time to turn it back on. I cant believe how 20 seconds seemed like 5 min's. I kept waiting, wondering how I would restore my files and hopefully not lose important company files.

The Windows logo comes on... good so far... The Duh-duh....! sound comes on... WindowsXP booting up... and Voila... Starts!

Thank you God!!!!!

I prayed a prayer before I turned it back on. Miracles happen.

I went back in and found the switch for Auto Updates and turned that off 'swiftly'.......

Just wanted to share my scary experience. :d

i still think its funny how some people have no end of trouble with the auto updates and others have non at all :mixedsmi:

My system is trying to predict the future. I've got vista and I use the date modified tab to search for recent downloads and aircraft. Before it used to say sort by modified today, yesterday and so on. Now it's come up with today, later this year and sometime in the future View attachment 7244
I don't like it doin' weird stuff unsolicited.

I just had to buy a new computer this weekend (living room PC, not Flight Sim PC thank god). So just picked up the special at Best Buy with Windows 7 (not liking Windows 7 so far, and I actually am in the minority that likes Vista). It had like 70 something updates. I have never had any issues with the auto-updates though. 9 times out of 10 I usually run the update utility before it auto-updates to get the latest anyway. Just sucks how computers can be so finicky from one to the next, and what works for one won't necessarily work for another. At least you didn't lose your important work files... That is why it is important if you have work stuff to do daily back-ups of it.

I believe that some updates will turn Auto-Updates back on if you've got em completely disabled. OFF is the one setting that throws a red flag to Winder's Security Center.

I have always set mine to notify me of updates but not install them. Have never had a problem with this setting on XP, Vista, or 7.

I did a dot.net update to ver 3 recently on my work XP sp2 machine, and aside from it now taking 20 minutes to boot up don't see any problems. I run dot.net v2 at home, and she's up in 2 minutes. I wonder what those hacks at microsoft did to my work compy.

+1

I have no problems and leave auto update on 24/7

Yup, same here.

I always keep on top of all updates because of all the programming stuff I'm involved with for school. I wouldn't want to miss a .net update or anything of that sort.
