Windows Update Caution for 10/13/2015

I just spent the last couple of hours learning my lesson the hard way and wanted to share my experience.

I run Win8.1 and have set my Windows Update to notify me, so I can install the updates manually and insure they get installed properly.

This morning when I performed the update, I noticed too late that the update started to install Windows 10. I have elected to install at a later date, but couldn't figure out what was going on.

Come to find out that I overlooked the Optional updates. MS has elected to include Windows 10 as an option update, and it was selected by default.

Anyways, I stopped the download and proceeded to install the other updates. Wrong. Each time I rebooted, the Windows 10 download resumed despite unchecking the update and hiding it.

I ended up doing a system restore back to Sunday night. This time I insured the Windows 10 option was deselected and hidden, before resuming the install of the Win8.1 and MS Office updates. Had to do the same process on the wife's Win7 laptop.

What a pain..

That is a devious and underhanded update. Here is the # KB3035583, suggest you get rid of it if you don't want W-10 right now because it will NOT let you alone!
 
Thanks for the heads up, I just checked my updates, and MS wanted me to download and install this, I declined needless to say.

I the update installed, and actually was able to change the reminder to not give me any notifications since I still may install Win10 within the 1 year timeframe. But after this morning, this update is now removed and hidden.

I get really tired and irritated really quick with aggressive sales, marketing and advertisements. It may be the American Way, but I still prefer to have some control over my choices.

Now to remove the pesky update from the wife's computer....

It's disturbing that Microsoft feels the need to use such underhanded tactics and are willing to try subterfuge on their customers.
There is a list of updates you really don't want because they contain access pathways for MS and other hidden items you don't want. Partial list:

Well, this could be it for me for now. Microsoft has locked out my ability to update my PC on my own. It gives me no option to do my selected updates without clicking OK to install Windows10. Seems somewhat underhanded that they are foisting Windows10 on folks this way... Kind of irritating actually.

Look for the "show all available updates" in small print under the Windows 10 logo.
 
I also read on the Kim Kommando show site that once you have installed Windows 10 the updates are automatic at their discretion, you cannot turn them off nor do you have any option on which get downloaded. Seems as though MS is basically taking over your PC which I find quite offensive.
 
When they started promoting and releasing Win10, it seems as if they changed the Windows Update page. Anyways, it took me awhile to navigate around the Win10 stuff.

What really irks me is that we supposedly had a year from the Win10 release to get it for free, but apparently they do not want us to have the option as to "when" we want to install it. From what I've read elsewhere there are still some issues with compatible drivers, so I figured I'd wait awhile before trying it.

My wife's laptop is already over five years old, and although it works fine she's been wanting another one with a better keyboard. I figured I'd wait until then to purchase another laptop with Win10 loaded.

My desktop is another matter. As I mentioned I'm not ready to be pushed into upgrading to Win10 until I know for certain it I can still run FSX, FS9 and my CAD program without issues or affect any of my graphic settings.

I was able to un-install the offending updates listed in this thread, and double check the settings in Windows Update which supposedly allows me to pick and choose which updates to install. I can still pick them out from the list but it will not let me install anything without first installing Win10.

I tried to look at the Update History, but it won't show the KB numbers... tricky. I have uninstalled all of the offending updates previously listed but I cannot install the updates I've checked. Tricky on the part of Microsoft... funny, I didn't hear anything about them dumping Windows 7.

Thanks for the Warning.

As a precaution I made an image of my drive last night. The last time I did that was in May it was definately time to do it agaiin.

Use caution I tried Hiding this update and after a reboot it was visible and selected again.

My laptop is not going to go away from W7 it runs too well the way it is.
 
Yep you cannot hide this update. it will hide until you reboot then it comes back pre selected.

No big problem I will just keep hiding it when I want to update.

I have checked m Win 7 system, and removed one of these.
I will keep track of this thread, and keep doing my manual updates.

Hey All,

My understanding is - I read it somewhere - that alot of the Win 10 spying and such if you want to call it that is built into Win 7 updates so even with just Win 7 refusing Win 10 MS still gets what they want. Do you really think you own your computer? Really? You do realize that under the digital millenium copyright act companies from car to tractor say you cannot mess with the car or tractor you bought because their software is critical to the proper running of a car or tractor - you doing something could mess up their software. Something wrong? Come to us an bring your checkbook, visa or debit card. In today's world it is all about capturing your cash and information (which is convertible to cash) as flow to them. Why? Well because they can. My XP computer is still hangin in but I'll have to do something at some point and I don't see a good option as I want the power - not them.

I am not worrying about the data collection (some call it spying)

I only care about keeping my older computer that runs W7 well from getting hosed up by moving to W10.

As far as the data collection everyone is trying to do it. You really can't hide anymore unless you completely unplug.

Agree completely except that when the WIN10 experience data collection runs for WIN10 it turns my FS into a slide show for ~ 15minutes - NOT acceptable.

In Toastmaker's response above, 2 of his KB's are questionable to be on the list.

I stopped all automatic updates after they installed the "get windows 10" adware as a recommended update. Now no updates are installed until I get a chance to research what each one is for and exactly what it does. A total PAIN having to go through 15 or so updates each month and spend an hour or more that I shouldn't have to making sure they don't force me into an operating system I don't want, don't need and doesn't run well on my machine. All I ask is for some honesty from Microsoft, if it's about windows 10 then list it as such don't list it as a security update or recommended update for windows 7.

Toastmaster, can you elaborate more on your list or provide a link to your source? The lists I have are slightly different, perhaps because some address the "data sharing" quest of M$ or perhaps due to the difference between OS. Seems that the wife's Win7 machine tends to get different updates than my Win8 machine, but I'm not certain about that.

I recall an earlier thread on SOH that listed various updates that were recommended to be removed in a specific order to prevent the Win10 update, but I wasn't able to find it.
