Windows update snafu

SOH Staff
Hi all

Yet another Windows foul up - I'm on Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit on auto update - so today the rig downloads and installs 18 critical updates - result CFS 2 no longer starts up - wont bore you with whole pathetic saga but the cure is to do a completely new install which worked and the result is my original installs now work - can anyone figure that out ? I didn't even have to replace the cfs2.exe on my installs - is it me ?

anyway thought I'd pass this on in the hope it saves a few tears

cheers

I'm running the same OS, 64 bit, etc., same updates but CFS2 started and ran with no problem. Guessing too many variables from system to system to blame just the updates. Although, that doesn't really matter when it's your system that goes goofy.

I'm running the same OS you are baldy, and installed the same updates. No problem with CFS2.

It must be me then - fortunately it's all working as it should now - as for having a dual boot I was under the impression you couldn't add an older OS, say Windows XP, to a later set up, Windows 7 - I think this is a bit above my pay grade anyway but I'm ready to learn

cheers

Actually Microsoft offers a virtual XP mode for Win 7 that allows you to run XP in a separate window. When I first got this PC with Win 7 I was hesitant because I was afraid of not being able to run CFS2 among other games so I had the virtual XP installed. It worked well, but I found that Win 7 actually worked much better than XP and CFS2 ran without any major issues. Ultimately I deleted the virtual XP from my system and never looked back.

Virtual XP is a free download and is still available from MS: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8002. However, Microsoft stopped all support for the XP operating system so there are no updates or security fixes. If you choose to install it for playing CFS2 you should only use virtual XP when not connected to the Internet to protect yourself.

This is not a dual boot. Virtual XP looks like any other program icon on your Win 7 Desktop and when you double click on it XP will open in a new window.

Virtual XP

Hi

I've been looking into this - you need XP sp3 Pro for this but there is something called VNware which says it can host other versions - I don't need it for CFS2 which is actually working well on W7 - what doesn't work on W7 is FSDSv2 or Ivan Hsu's model converter so I'm looking at the possibilities for those - dunno how steep the learning curve is but I'll give it a go and keep people posted

Baldy et al,

I was also having a lot of trouble with the update on Tuesday because I had uninstalled the update that placed the Windows 10 Icon on my taskbar. Once I reinstated that update, Windows Update returned to normal.

Those wiley buzzards. :redfire:

Virtual Pc

Making some progress -got VMware Workstation 12 Player installed and XP Home SP2 as OS -have loaded CFS2 and FSDSv2 in there with no calamity so far - still got loads to figure out but am hopeful.

Win 10

Baldy, go to How-To Geek [newsletter@howtogeek.com] and check out the issue
for How to Stop Windows 7 or 8 from Downloading Windows 10 Automatically.

Hi John

I don't think that was the problem - I've 'hidden' the Windows 10 update so I'm not troubled by that - hopefully I am trouble free at the moment - it's from 'how to geek' that I found the VMware which allows me to operate FSDS via Windows XP inside a Windows 7 machine - so far without bother ( touch wood )

thanks anyway
