...without smooth gradient

Lucas

Members +
Hi,

..and another issue that I lastly observed...and put it here beacause I observed it after switch on DX10 (I have DX10SF).

There is no smooth gradient on sky or water textures. Look at screenshots:

(look at water near to beach)

What is the reason?

I have turn the bloom on, but turning it off didn’t help. I also have SweetFX, but delete it also didn’t help.

NI settings:

All the best,
Lucas

Hi Lucas,
I don't get that effect and I can see the "contours" of the sea colour gradient in your shot. Maybe Paul can help.

Nothing, Poul... as you see on second screen in 1st post of this thread, this is visible on dusk sky; but these 3 screens was made in daytime. Besides, look at the water on first above screen...

Edit: it looks like the effect is visible on dusk or dawn...

The i5-2500K@4.3-gig is pretty capable: not so the 560 gpu and/or the monitor, so it may be a cause of the issue, but there are many things which might have an impact on whether a particular screen displays banding - the most common (as someone else pointed out, but not the case here) caused by selecting 16-bit instead of 32-bit. This may hapen when the gpu is unable to render at that detail level. Inspector setting? Driver version?, FSX.CFG? In one of your threads I suggested you read the "How-To" guide in oorder to better understand what settings cause what impact in FSX.. Your response was
Yes, I read it. My Inspector's settings are based on your document (with "subtle" changes):
Well, those "subtle changes" might be the cause: Similarly with the fsx.cfg on the March 20. In other posts you have ignored some of the settings which I've suggested, and any, or all of these together, might have this impact., so without knowing what your system looks like now - It's difficult for me to make any new "prescription" to help you!

Regards,

pj

Ok Poul. NI settings are in first post. As you can see in proportion to your "How-to" I changed:
- FXAA off
- Force VSync off (I fly in windowed mode)
- AF - 8x (I think 16x is slightly reduce fps)
- Max pre-rendered frames - I set on "Use 3d app ..." - I think that is more fps now
- FPS Limiter - set to 30 (in FSX is Unlimited) - in many test which I've done I see that on my system this gives me more fps.

System:
i5 2500K@4.3, GTX560 1GB, 4x2GB RAM, HDD SATA3 7200. In screen settings I have set 1280x1024 and 32-bit.

Driver: 334.89

Poul, I rememebr that you made new CFG file for me (on AVSIM forum) but I didn't download it (and next day or two, it was unable).

Best regards and thanks for replies...
Lucas

Edit: I made a few screenshots at dawn:

Hi Lucasz: The screenshots look pretty good, and I think the problem of banding isn't so apparent in these shots. You might have to live with this, as (apart from som Inspector fps and vSync settings) there isn't too much wrong anywhere.

One of the major issues is the gpu has only one gig of ram. This is very minimal, and I would suspect that anyone using this card has this problem, (jump in anyone, by all means!) but either hasn't noticed it, or they recognise it as being an issue with the card. Is there any way where you can get a better GPU to try? - say a 580/660/670/680? I will bet even money that this is the main cause.

Secondly - 4 GB of system ram is not (in my opinion) adequate to run 64-bit Vista and FSX, with all it's addons- so - can you expand to 8 gig by adding two more 2 gig dimms (must be of the same part number)?

The fsx.cfg:

I've made some changes, but more for framerate rather than banding.

Inspector:

16x will make for better graphics on the ground - you're not gaining much with 8x.
2x SGSS will get better frames but with slightly poorer AA.
I haven't looked at vsync as we don't have your current Inspector.

All the Best,

pj

"Is there any way where you can get a better GPU to try? - say a 580/660/670/680?"
I would like to, but "money could be problem" :( ...although, if I sell present card, hmm...
In "my" shop I see only 660, but they have 2GB - do you think that it's sufficient? ...and does this card is "fit" to my CPU? ..and one more - my MB has PCI-E 2.0 standard, so can I install PCIE3.0 card?

580/670/680 I think I can get only used, but max 670.

"4 GB of system ram is not (in my opinion) adequate to run 64-bit Vista and FSX"
I have 8GB (4x2) ;)

"I haven't looked at vsync as we don't have your current Inspector."
Hmm, I think I don't understand you here :(

Ps. You propose "1/2 Refresh rate". Do you think this is necessary if I play in windowed mode?

Poul, thank you very much for files.

Best regards,
Lucas

Inspector's "1/2 Refresh Rate" + "Standard" and 30 set in FSX is the "normal way configure for working vSync only when in fullscreen mode.

Windows 7 "Aero" fully fixes vSync in Windowed Mode - but that's in Windows 7........

D3DOverider and [Graphics] "ForceWindowedVSync=1" will do a good job to handle vSync in Windowed Mode. Whether we have two and more monitors and what we want to do with them - will determine the success. Whether the frame rate is set in FSX or in Inspector is pretty subjective. A single monitor, full-screen mode, 30 in FSX, 1/2 RR and "Standard" is the normal and most successful configuration for setting up the graphics. Since we've had a "successful DX10" mode - Windowed Mode has always required a more complicated setup solution.

A 660 will give much better performance than the 560 - even the 560Ti is much better, so - yes if it's available and you can afford it..... and will allow the use of:-

[BufferPools]
UsePools=0

A PCI-3 compliant card will run just fine in a PCI-2 slot, and you will probably never be aware of any difference.

I hope this helps a little more! :encouragement:

pj

Thank you for your explanation, Poul.
a. Do you think that 660/670/680 are proper models for my i5 2500K?
b. 660 has 192-bit. 256-bit will be probably better - right?

Best regards,
L.

Good morning, Lucasz:

a). It's not so much a match for the processor, but a match for the processors speed, or power, if you like. I run an "old" 2600K - a two-year-old proc.. but it's running at 5.0 gig and makes a very good match for the 780. If I could move it to 5.3 gig - it would be a better match, as the 780 will still be top dog.
In your case - at 4.3 gig - any of those cards will work - even a 560Ti is ok, but the 660 is a 3rd-grade card, so you would be better to wait and save up to get a good card - the 680 - as this will match the proc, and will even allow you to move the proc speed up tp 4.6 gig - then your FSX would begin to fly! It will give you much-needed headroom, and will make your settings choices much easier.

b). The 680 is a very good substitute for a 780 - (cost-wise), and better than a 760. Always buy the *80 when purchasing Nvidia - and yes - those two numbers + texture fill rate are key when choosing a GPU for FSX.

Hope this helps, :encouragement:

pj

Do you think with 660 will be big performance improve in relation to my 560?

Yes it will: the 560 is a low-end card, even when compared to the 560Ti.

One more important question Poul – I have PSU XFX Core 550W – do you think it is sufficient for 660 and rest of my hardware?

You need to evaluate the power requirement for the new gpu - particularly the wire connection(s) to the top of it. Many of the recent gpu's - those produced over the last two - three years have required at least one x 6-pin cable fitted at the top edge of the card, with the more powerful GPU's requiring 2 x 6-[in oe 1 x 6-pin and one 8-pin connector. This gpu requires just the one x 6-pin, which your psu probably has.

To adequately assess the power supply's ability to supply sufficient power for your system, you should not be asking anyone "what they think of this psu" - all anyone else can do is guess. I don't have your system in front of me, nor the detailed information supplied with the parts as you purchased them, nor am I party to your plans for future expansion of the system.

So, you need to consider the power requirements:-
for this card (from here:)
the power supply (from here:) - particularly the current (Amps) on the 12volt rail.
the power requirements for your motherboard & processor (this may not be easy, or even possible)
the power needed for the hard drive(s).
any water pumps or extra cooling fans.

Expanding on the previous paragraph - 500 watts is "about" minimum for this system, and I would suggest it could be a little "unstable" when overclocking.
550 watts is still in that "minimum" range.

"Load" is a loose term for "power", and "power" is measured in Watts (W). The main area of concern is that the PSU can deliver the (quoted) voltages at the (quoted) currents, i.e. +3.3V@20A, +5V@20A, +12V@45A, -12V@0.3A, +5VSB@2.5A

What happens is that as the proc speed is pushed up by overclocking - the amount of current drawn increases: as we add a more powerful GPU - again the amount of current drawn increases: as we add another drive - the amount of current drawn increases: as we add a high-power water pump - the amount of current drawn increases: ... and so on..
As a result of these extra additions to the system, what can occur when using a low-end PSU is that it is unable to supply that current at a 12volt "pressure" - and so that voltage drops.. and this is where our instability jumps in. This is where blue screens happen: That psu MUST be able to hold that 45 Amps at a full 12 Volts without fluctuation: this is the same for all the other supplies from our PSU, and this is why when building a pc for FSX - most experienced builders will go with a 750Watt PSU as a minimum - some will quote their minimum as being 1000Watts.
My preference is for 750, but I am using (for three years) a Thermaltake RX2 850

Anyway, Lucasz - I hope this helps with your improvements. It's a lot to absorb.

All the best,

pj

(snip)...

Just a heads up. The 770 is really a rebadged 680 (same GPU core), which has the benefit of a faster clock and memory. Of course a used 680 will be much cheaper than a 770, though a 770 now can be had for a little more than $300US. Unfortunately a 770 needs at least a 600W PSU (+12V @ 42A). One other consideration is that the SB mobos don't support PCIE 3.0, so you'll (maybe) lose a tiny bit of performance running in a PCIE 2.1 slot.

As for powering a 660, which will be a noticeable improvement over a 560, if your 550W PSU is of reputable quality it probably is sufficient according to this (note the 450W +12V @ 24A requirement):
http://www.evga.com/products/Specs/GPU.aspx?pn=c46f9673-5403-4e55-b5ef-b587b2715d13

I used the word 'probably' to take in account the info PaulJ gave above, though 100W should be a decent amount of margin.

Poul, FamilyMan - thank you for your replies.

...to summarise:

On this page -> http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine I calculated what PSU I need when using 660, 660Ti or 670 (to remind, I have 2500K @ 4.3 GHz and stock voltage and 8 x 2 GB DDR3)
After a few calculations we have:
- with 660 - I need 413W (even when I rise OC to for example 4.6 and 1.5V - I need 456W)
- with 660Ti - I need 425W (even when I rise OC to for example 4.6 and 1.5V - I need 468W)
- with 670 - I need 436W (even when I rise OC to for example 4.6 and 1.5V - I need 479W)

To sum up: I will buy 660 or used 660Ti and I think that my PSU will be sufficient even over light CPU OC increasing. If something will be wrong (unstable) then I will change PSU.

Question is: does 660Ti is siginificantly better then 660 in FSX environment? (is it worth to spend a little more money for used 660Ti instead new 660? [for example, I have an eye on http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4319#sp])

..and I'm still thinking if 192-bit bus in 660 series isn't worst then 256, in FSX environment... I hope not ;)

-----------

Wow, nice off topic (I'm sorry) - maybe moderator could move this thread (about GPU) to another topic?

Best regards,
Lucas

Post #12:

those two numbers + texture fill rate are key when choosing a GPU for FSX. This is what makes the GTX *80 series so much better than the low & mid-rangeboards for FSX - but the 660 (or 660Ti) has many features which put either into the "next grade" above the 560.I'm sure you'll do the right thing....

:encouragement:

Hi Poul,

unfortunately, last time I had hdd crash, so I had to buy new one, install everything from the beginning and ... yes ... install new (used) GPU GTX 660 Ti (2GB).

I made only few tests for now, but generally using the same FSX, NI, FSX.CFG, DX10SF settings as earlier when I had GTX560 ...and I don't see improvement :(
I thought with settings same as earlier I will see more fps in dense clouds in my PMDG777 VC, but unfortunately no...

Poul, could you look at my CFG, NI and DX10SF settings and advice me what should I change?

I use deafult waves (other textures from REX4 and optimized for DX10) and ASN as a weather engine.
My hardware: i5 2500K@4.3GHz, 8GB RAM, GTX660Ti ver. OC 2GB, HDD SATAIII.

I will be grateful for help.
Best regards,
Lucas

I made only few tests for now, but generally using the same FSX, NI, FSX.CFG, DX10SF settings as earlier when I had GTX560 ...and I don't see improvement.

Hi Lucasz:-

Inspector:-
Turn off FXAA and disallow it.
Turn off Anisotropic Filter Optimization
Turn off Anisotropic Sample Optimization
Turn off Frame Rate Limiter - set 30 in FSX.
Turn off Threaded Optimization

fsx.cfg:View attachment lucasz2_fsx_660_chgd.txt

Last - open the DX10 Fixer controller, and set your AA to 2x.

You are still at 4.3 GHz, and that is still very slow for your expectations. Once you have found "smooth" with reasonable frame rate, you can move some parameters up slightly. There are a number of flyers who set "1/3 frame Rate" in Inspector, and set "20" fps in FSX - it's quite smooth, and will allow some higher slider settings. Don't make the mistake of thinking that a few adjustments here or there will somehow give you 30 fps - it won't. Your system will only hold 30 fps with most settings set very low. FSX still wants the highest processor speed it can get, and third-grade GPU's will still only give third-grade performance. The 660 will give slightly better performance, but your processor speed will make the most difference - ok!

I hope this helps.

All the Best,

pj
