A Pacific Southwest Boeing 727 Airliner & a Cessna 172 collided mid-air near Lindbergh Field, San Diego in September 1978. The Boeing was on downwind to land & the Cessna was completing ILS practice. All on board the aircraft died, along with some on the ground. The aircraft were destroyed, along with houses on the ground. As is common, there was a chain of events leading to the disaster, but one stands out on its own. Come see how such a thing can happen. Hope you find this interesting. Cheers.

I saw it - I was working on the corner of 4th and Washington - I was outside facing west, the collision in the air happened behind me and the driver of the car
I was standing next to was looking straight at it. It was the look on his face at the same moment as the sound of an engine shrieking (the 727's engines must have ingested some of the small plane on impact) that made me turn around.
I wish I hadn't.
It was horrific. The aftermath was far worse.
Why bring it up?

This is not the forum for this sort of thing. Check out the newshawks forum.

Why bring it up? For the same reason that the Air Safety Institute and so many others publicise these accidents, ie lessons to be learnt for flying IRL today, particularly “see and avoid” where such collisions in GA are on the increase, so as to save lives. Cheers.

usually these kinds of accidents are investigated immediately - as this one was. Bringing it up here today can serve no such purpose as 'lessons to be learned' today.

When an accident happens you can go to the FAA website or follow 'blancolirio' on YT for qualified investigatory information and professional evaluation of the cause or contributing factors.

This particular accident was incredibly horrific - it was investigated and the cause was identified - anyone who wants to look at the public record can do so. The residents of North Park will never forget it.

This is a 'general discussion' forum - but this crash is not a topic I would expect to find here under any circumstances -

More than happy for it to be deleted if a Moderator thinks so. Purposely avoided any pics of graphic details, but do not want to offend. Cheers.

Yeah - I wasn't being hostile or aggressive about it and have no intention of calling for moderation..folks can discuss whatever they like within the code of conduct...it's just odd to
come to a place where I expect to see discussions about my favorite escape from the days efforts and events only to be smacked in the face with this reminder.
Have at it - I can look at other forums for a while..

I don't see a need to delete, and while the discussion is still civil, I see way too much potential for it to go south real quick. Because of this, I'm just going to close it.
