I almost feel like a kid who's met a celebrity! :icon_lol:

Flying a campaign mission with three of our chaps and came across the Baron with five of his. Lord, what a simming moment! Got hits on him but one of his wingmen plastered me good and proper and I was lucky to be able to force-land in one piece. So close...the one who got away! He was "THIS" big he was! :icon_lol:

Great event, Siggi! This could make me have a go on the British side - must be a special moment in this sim, to meet HIM.

Special isn't quite the right word.

Heart stopping. :faint:

It was almost surreal. At first I thought they were DVIIs, then I realised they were Dr1s and thought "cool, not seen those in the campaign yet." Then had a bit of a worry about how agile they are and maybe I was about to be in for a hard time. Then the colours started to appear...eh? Hang on...? No way! :icon_lol:

They were bloody good though, as a team. I never had a real chance on the Baron, his wingy was all over me.

Has anyone else crossed swords with him in a campaign mission, or am I the first?

Oh god, memory flashback...I remember, two or three times in RB2-3D, going on the right day to the right place to try and see MvR's famous last flight with May and Brown. Never managed it, not even sure it was programmed in.

Nah, a squib like me is small potatoes to those chaps. :icon_lol:

I reckon he'd have liked you in his bag though. Only 9 of his victims were Camels. And 1 Dolphin and 3 SE5s.

Probably a contentious thing to say but I'd hazard only about a generous quarter of his kills were made against machines that could have had a chance to beat his in a game of Top Trumps. :wiggle:

fifty-five or so of his kills were 2-seaters.

In BHaH, he would fly Albatros D III, and maybe D V, and then the Dr.1

The early D III has no serious opponent plane; the S.E. 5 a was the first two-gunner (if we don't regard Collishaw's Tripe),
but against the Dr.1, only the Camel could take up the fight (one against one, that is - not like 5 S.E.'s against one Dr.1; the end of Werner Voss)

If MvR would have lived long enough to experience the D VII - I'm pretty sure, it would have been disaster to any Allied flight, meeting him.
In the right hands, that plane is unbeatable...

PS: maybe he also flew the Albatros D II already; also: no real opponent in it's time there

If I chance to meet MvR it would be over drinks in the Jasta 11 mess! Contrary to my nik I fly mostly German aircraft. I have been known to try a Noop or a Camel occasionally.

But he had to switch back to the Albatros DV from the Dr1 a few times. Without going out into the shed at midnight to find his biography I'm going to put this down to supply issues.

MvR certainly flew the DII. He was in one when he shot down Lanoe Hawker.

I met Him and all his April 1917 droogs for a spot of the old ultra-violence while flying a Fee for 20 Squadron. Our dear old friend, the red red kruvvy, soon began to flow, but damn little of it was Teutonic. I got from Allmenroder a good fisty tolchocking while my observer was slipping the cut-throat britva into fat, stinking billygoat Lothar-boy's yarbles, if he has any yarbles, that eunuch jelly!

Next time, Allmenroder, next time!

I saw and met the Baron also

I met the Baron and Oswald Boelcke (is it spelled right) at the same time. I was flying for the French in Esc 3 in 1916. Can't remember the date but I had been taking pictures like xcrazy . Yes I had my labels on and that is how I was able to identify them. But when I looked for my pictures, they weren't there. It was then that I realized that I had been pushing the wrong keys in all of the excitement. I was on an easy setting and invincible (sorry to make you cringe) but I had been "kilt" too many times and wanted to see the campaign progress. I have now used a different set up to take pictures with just one key rather than trying to find the ctrl + ; as in the English keyboard.

Maeran,

If my memory is correct he switched back to the DV because of a structural problem with the Dr1 which I think was a weak tail unit.

Also you beat me to the punch with Lanoe Hawker (I am glad I read the rest of the posts before commenting).

Thanks
