X-Plane Revisited

To begin, I have to admit my only journey into X-P was way back in Version 5 or so and it obviously was a WIP. In the process of some historical research today I found a link in the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum (they have sims for the public to use) and it started me looking...

Things have improved! The aircraft and scenery in these links are mostly payware but a good indication of the strides being made.

I can't see a need for a dedicated X-P Forum here but I've included a link to the X-Plane Freeware forum (registration is required for downloads)

Here's the links to a few aircraft and scenery websites (one note: the payware prices are certainly reasonable!)

It's definately much improved. It looks like it has neat features such as reflections on the water. Maybe it's just me but some of the pictures from the realscenery site look like there is a faint shadow over everything that make the pictures look darker than they should. The aircraft themselves still have a way to go before they are up to the standards of the best of FS9/X. From what I've heard, the main attraction of X-plane is its superior modeling of flight dynamics.

I think its great. I just wish it had two things....

Ability to move away from the panel (like in FS)

and....

Keyboard matching so one could match controls from FS to X-P.

I have tried for a X-Plane forum room here, but the guys kind of didnt want to do it.

It is a good sim. Its not like FS, but its a good, detailed sim.

A change of seasons would be nice. Airports with scenery you don't have to buy would be nice. It consumes large hard drives.

I have version 9.21 and world scenery. I am still not impressed yet, but glad to see them working diligently away at it. FS9 and FSX planes still look and feel much better, but I strongly doubt their so called "most realistic flight dynamics." It's like flying on a surveyor's plumb-bob. However, I do like the way they arrive at them by creating models of what they want to fly and letting those parameters determine for the most part the flight characteristics. For the price not a bad flight sim, but I am looking forward to the above items being adopted.

Every time I see someone post picts of X-Plane I think that is really nice but then I find out that you have to buy the nice looking scenery. When it comes to comparing default X-Plane scenery and FSX default scenery I think FSX is better. I'm just not ready for X-Plane.

I saw X-Plane in WalMart last week and it was down to $39 US was previously $49. For a moment I thought about getting it until i notice FSX Deluxe was also $39. I scrapped the whole idea. I will buy FSX when I can upgrade the PC.
