I believe so.... Last week I was running integrated Nvidia 6150SE graphics with 64 MB of VRAM (it had one gig but none of it was useable, it was for Hybrid SLI) Man... Xplane SUCKED! all low settings and still only got about 10 FPS. Then, I got my BFG 9600 GT OC2. WOW! BIG IMPROVEMENT. All settings maxed at around 50 FPS! Based on my findings, X-plane is a 20/80 split. 20% CPU and 80% GPU.
Before upgrade-------------------------
-Processor--AMD athlon X2 64 4800+ 2.5 GHz dual core
-GPU--Crap as mentioned above.
-HDD--320 gig
-Monitor-- Mag Inovision 15" anolog crappy thing
-PSU--250Watt thing
Crysis-- not even attempted
XP9-- ouch!
After Upgrade--------------------------

-Monitor-- Dell S2209W 22" Widescreen HD LCD @ 1920x1080 (1080P)
-PSU--BFG tech EX550 @ 550 Watts
Crysis-- Max at 8x AA = 30-40 FPS
XP9-- All maxed out 16x AA =45-50 FPS
