Zandvoort Historic Grand Prix 2013.

My first visit to Zandvoort, and what a great day to go!
A whole weekend focussed on historic racing, with an additional focus on '50 years 911'. On Saturday a long program with various races and qualifying sessions, and of course I took a lot of photos. Here are a few:

Strolling through the paddock, I found this Lotus 25 just sitting there:

And this Maserati 250F warming up:

Marking its territory a bit:

Brabham BT35 and former Derek Daly Chevron B42 formula 2 cars:

Alfa Romeo T33:

Lotus 18 after the race:

Porsche brought a 917 from their museum, what a small car! I Always thought it would be bigger:

Time for some racing action, starting early moning with the pre-66 touring cars:

Followed by the first F1 race of the day, the pre-61 class; Cooper T43:

Gordini T16:

The race-winning Lotus 18:

The Scarab that came in second:

A Cooper-Bristol:

Lotus 18 going over the 'Hunzerug' and towards the 'Scheivlak':

One of two priceless Maserati's 250F:

Apparently this is a Lister-Jaguar nicknamed the 'Monzanapolis'.. Couldn't find any info on the net, but is sure looks beautiful!:

Lightning Envoyette in the Lurani Trophy Formula Junior class:

And an Elva 100 in the same class:

Missed most of this race as I wanted to visit the paddock and be ready in time for some big guns in the World sportscar master qualifying session, like this Lola T70 Mk.3:

Open Chevron B8 and a closed B4 together:

Lotus 23B:

The Alfa T33 on track:

Porsche 911 RSR:

Another T70, this one a mk.2 Spyder:

Ford GT40:

I thought this was a 908, but apparently it's a KMW Porsche SP20:

Cooper Monaco T61M:

Another T70 Mk.3:

Two Formula 2 cars in their first race of the weekend; I have no idea what this is exactly:

But this is a Lotus 69:

Lunch break, and time for some demonstrations. The first one was done by the Yamaha Classic Racing Team, founded by a Dutchman who restored and rebuilt various Yamaha's over the years. This was the last public display though, as the bikes will be shipped to the Yamaha museum soon. Various former drivers came to Zandvoort to ride their bikes one last time.

TZ250:

OW01:

RD05A:

OW16, driven by the biggest name in motor racing, Giacomo Agostini, fifteen times world champion:

Another Dutchman bought the remains of the Coloni F1 team and is using these cars for various displays; this weekend former F1 driver Michel Bleekemolen got to drive the 1989 car:

While former F1 driver and Le Mans winner Jan Lammers got to drive the 1991 car:

Unfortunately the display became quite realistic, as Bleekemolen's car broke down on lap two and Lammers...:

..Outbraked himself and got stuck in the gravel in the first corner, the famous Tarzan.

First race after the break was the hour-long German Youngtimer Trophy, in which everything goes as long as it's a touring car or GT made between 1966 and 1988, so at the front we see a GT40 and a group of Porsche 935's and 911's:

And a car like this former DTM BMW M3 Group A:

And a 911 in a classic scheme (Although the original car wearing this scheme was a 917):

After that came the second F1 race of the day, this time for car between 1961 and 1965 (The 1.5 liter cars):

The Lotus 25 :

Brabham BT4:

Still trying to identify this one :

Back to the touring cars, this time the Dutch historic touring car class. 55 Cars lined up for the start which is a recipe for disaster and most of the race was driven behind the safety car.
Here a Lotus Elite and a Mini Cooper together:

Arie Luyendyk driving a Bizzarini 5300GT; he would finish on the podium:

A quite rare Iso Rivolta :

One of the reasons for the safety car:

A Fiat Abarth 1000:

Next up was the main event of the day, the Formula 1 race for cars from 1968 to 1985! A full field of 22 cars, all powered by a Cosworth engine, and strangely enough all cars not really the best of their period.. I guess the real winners are all in museums now.

So we see cars like this Hesketh 308C (The race was won by a 308E):

Tyrrell 012:

Shadow DN1/3A:

Lotus 80:

March 751:

Arrows A3-3:

Tyrrell 003:

JPS Lotus 92:

JPS Lotus 76; note the double rear wing, which had a flexible mount!:

Again the Lotus 80, which was originally designed as a pure ground effect car with no wings, but that didn't work. Adding wings didn't help a lot and the car was discarded before the end of the season. Now it's winning historic races!:

The Amon F101:

This Lotus 87 ended up in the gravel at the chicane:

Most people left after this race, but there were still two sessions on the program, starting with the Historic Monoposto class, basically everything not F2 or F1; here we have two FF2000 cars:

And a March SV79 Supervee:

Last session of the day was the qualifying for the 'Gentleman drivers' throphy, a big field full of 1960's touring cars and GT's; like this AC Cobra driven by WTCC drtiver Tom Coronel:

A Cooper Bobtail:

A Belgian Ferrari 250 SWB:

A Morgan Plus 4 SLR, never even knew that car before yesterday!:

A Porsche 904/6 driven by former Porsche works driver Jurgen Barth:

Lotus 11 Le Mans:

And a Jaguar E-type:

It was a long, tiring and warm day, but seeing all these classic cars was just fantastic and I will definitely go back next year!

For those few apparently interested, here's a short video made with my Phone of the entire F1 field passing by :
