How much does one US gal of gass weigh ?

How much does one US WWII air launched torpedo weigh?:typing:

Bob,

A gallon of water is 8.33 pounds and I think a gallon of gasoline is just over 6 pounds.

A Mark 14 21" ship torpedo was 3,280 pounds.

The Mark 13 air dropped torpedo was 2,200 pounds.*

*The Mark 13 was also considered to be the best torpedo for PT boats due to its lighter weight and better reliability.

1 gallon of gasoline equals 5.8 to 6.5 lbs.

I was instructed to use 80 and 100LL (Low Lead) octane aviation gasoline at 6 pounds per gallon when calculating weight and balance for aircraft during my flight training (circa 1977). Section 312 of the CFS2 air files also states 6 pounds per gallon for reciprocating engines, 6.60156 or 6.59766 pounds per gallon for jet fuel during WWII (I guess 6.6 pounds would be about right). I also found an air file entry of 6.80078 for fuel for later model jets.

Note: CFS2 uses fuel consumption or fuel load that is directly porportional to fuel weight per gallon. For instance if I changed the fuel weight from 6 pounds per gallon to 3 in section 312 of the air file, CFS2 will interpret this as half the fuel load of what is at 6 pounds, cutting endurance/range by nearly half.

The reason I am asking thoes ? is because i am building three missions flown from Midway. The first one is the flight of the six TBFs from Pearl to Midway. The TBF at that time had a range of 1090nm. The distance from Pearl to Midway is 1338nm.I figured they carried an extra tank in the bombay.I flew the mission with the stock 1% TBF but had to stay with it all the way there about 8 hours of stright flying. With an extra tank I could put it on autopilot and do other things.:typing:

My stats for the:

TBF-1 (I assume this would be the correct model for that time period) states 1215 (1055 NM) miles with torpedo, 1450 (1260 NM) miles as scout (does not state a max range). Fuel 335-395 gallons.

As a comparison, the TBM-1C (and probably the TBF-1C) at 1105 (960 NM) miles with torpedo, 2335 (2028 NM) miles Max. Fuel 335-726 gallons. 335 gal. internal, 275 gal. weapon bay tank and two 58 gal. drop tanks.

I know that published figures vary a bit, so this is just a sample of my junk.

And...

Yep, an auto pilot sounds like a good idea for that long range hop!

:kilroy:

Keep in mind also that many aircraft in the field were retrofitted/upgraded, some of them to later aircraft production version standards, so it is very plausible that the TBF-1 could have been equiped in field for the 275 gal. tank.

The mission I am working on is the flight from Pearl to Midway by the six TBFs just before the Battle Of Midway.:typing:

Info I have...

TBF-1 prototype first flight Aug. 1, 1941

TBM-1 delivery began Sept. 1942

TBM-1C delivery began Sept. 1943

It appears that it would be the TBF-1, fuel listed at 335-395 galllons.
