POSTED: Short S23 Empire

I just uploaded a native CFS2 Short S23 flying boat. She is a relatively crude model intended for AI and scenery use, though she has been left in player-flyable mode....you won't find her up to par for that role. She is multi-LOD and has fantastic framerates for an aircraft of her size. :wiggle:

AND....her current appearance could be vastly improved with a new skin.

I had intended to develop her into a player version in both civilian and military skins, but I haven't got the time to devote to the project. :kilroy:

If any designer wishes to carryon with the development, I will be happy to provide them with the FSDS source files.

Thanks TR!! Does she have bowspray? (I'd ask if she has a wake, but I don't want to cast a pall over her.)

Great AI plane TR. She spruces up the scenery immensely.

Here's a shot of an Empire Class en route to points unknown with VIPs aboard and a Spitfire escort.

I was looking for a camo paint scheme image for the S23 (thought I would try my hand at painting her) when I came across this.

Might be of interest to whomever volunteers to take TR's model to the next level.

ps - I still haven't found any sort of reference images of the S23 in camo.

On Wings Palette there is this profile:

I followed the link to the source, but coudn't find anything better.

Gav....

...here yah go! The photo is small and in B&W, but the camo is standard brown/green and the markings are spartan roundels and tricolor.

Great discovery, BUT...

...Clare was never in the RAF. Many of the civilian Cs were camo-painted even while in civil/government service. The ones the RAF got had new registrations....for example, Clio became AX-659. Not that this makes any difference to your use of the camo pattern. Go for it. :jump:

You can find several profiles (including four camouflaged ones) as well as lots of other related stuff, here:

Trouble ahead

Looks like it won't be as easy as I thought to slap a coat of camo on the old bird.
I slapped a coat of green on one side of the fuselage and ran into a mapping issue.

Looks like I might have to ask TR for the source and fix up the texture mappings. This means that it isn't going to happen soon.

Stirlitz, thanks for the great link

Sorry kids

TR - I'll PM you my email address.

...your email. It's never as easy as we think it will be.

You shouldn't encounter any mapping issues, but I do make mistakes....at least one a day. :faint:

Thanks

E-mail checked.

Certainly didn't mean to disparage the work you had put into the Clio.

It is just that the upper & lower surface of the wings, the rudder and the floats are all sharing paint with the port side of the fuselage. Makes painting a camo scheme a little difficult. I will need to give those areas their own bitmap.

At least that is the theory - I have no idea if or when I will get it done. I need to go to the airport in an hour and pick up my parents (who are staying with me for the next 2 weeks). After they leave I am of to Amsterdam for a weeks work.

There are a few profiles in the Osprey book 'Sunderland Squadrons of the Second World War'. Would you like a scan, sir? PM me e-mail if so.

No...

...offense taken. I'm sure you'll do an admirable job on the old girl.

Should you feel the urge, I can probably dig-up something closely resembling a Boulton-Paul turret that you can slip in on the tail for the C and in all three positions for the Gs. Let me know. :wiggle:

Yes...

Thanks TR!! Does she have bowspray? (I'd ask if she has a wake, but I don't want to cast a pall over her.)

...her CFG file is setup to use the Sunderland Wake Effect triggered by the Lights command key.

However, that will only work in the player role, not on the AI. And if you put a regular wake on her in the DP it will stay with her in the air....I think. LOL.

Maybe some testing is in order....and I'm addressing the prime candidate for that job. After all you have some pleasant weather in which to conduct the tests down there.
:wavey:

Here's the profiles I mentioned. I also have an article that was in January's Aeroplane on the shooting down of the 'Corio' if that's of interest too!
