I'm doing some repaints of the Flight Relplica's P-40N, which was flown by the Dutch KNIL/RNEIAAF in the Netherlands Indies. There are some things that I couldn't find and I hope someone here can provide me with wat I need.

Meet Izzy the Injun.



According to the description this plane had an Indianhead on the starboard side. I use these books for reference. http://www.dutchprofile.nl/publications
But the Indianhead is not in the book. Does anyone here have information about this Indianhead?

Thanks for the link Dave, but the starboard artwork shows the Bull on this rendition, whereas my source mentions an Indianhead!

Hi Cees,

I'm the proud owner of the standard work "Camouflage en Kentekens" by J.H.N. Greuter. It contains many pictures from the aircraft of 120 sqn. But nearly all of them show the starboard side with name. The ones taken from the port side all show the "Banteng Marah" designed by J.C.N. van Boldrik, however in the text it is written that most pilots had their own nose art and refused to use the official logo. It even contains a quote from van Boldrik in which he expresses his frustration that the pilots refuse to use the official squadron artwork!
As this book doesn't contain any pictures from these personal logos, I don't think there are any "public" photos of this artwork.

I saw your paintwork on the C3-500, which was flown by the squadronleader Hans Anton Maurenbrecher. The spinner should be red with the white line (for squadron leader) instead of orange.
In 1944 the aircraft used by 120sqn were:

A-flight:
C3-500 - C3-503 (Red spinner)
C3-504 - C3-507 (Blue spinner)
C3-508 - C3-511 (Yellow spinner)

B-flight:
C3-512 - C3-515 (Red spinner)
C3-516 - C3-519 (Blue spinner)
C3-520 - C3-523 (Yellow spinner)

All aircraft were painted in the standard scheme Dark Olive Drab No.41 with spots of Medium Green No.42 (so these are still missing on your repaint). These sports are clearly visible on the colour images in the book.

But: Port side is left Starboard is right. (Port and starboard are nautical terms for left and right, respectively. Port is the left-hand side of or direction from a vessel, facing forward. Starboard is the right-hand side, facing forward. Since port and starboard never change, they are unambiguous references that are not relative to the observer.)

The names were on the port side mostly whereas the artwork was on the right. According to my book the medium green blotches were later overpainted? :dizzy: Speaking of Maurenbrecher: he had 'Nebukatnezar' as a text on the port side. Any idea what that looked like?

As I'm mildly dyslexic, left and right aren't a really natural things for me. That's why I normally make a mess of it.

There is no picture in the book which shows the the left from Maurenbrecher's aircraft (at least not a clear one). Most of the colour pictures are a bit blurry, which it is sometimes hard to identify the individual aircraft.

BTW When you ever have a few Euros to spend try to buy an example of this book. I was able to find a perfect copy at a second handbook store. It wasn't cheap, but it was definitely worth the money.

Ah yes, that's a well know phenomenon with people that are dyslexic.
