Strange looking B17 released by Allen!

SOH-CM-2024
I just watched a tv sending about us 100rd.bomber regiment and their raids into Germany in 1943.
These B-17's (not all of them) had a very long nose, ending in a cone,-more like a B-26 Marauder.what type no. was that ? And do we have a texture for this type awailable.
Killer Svend

Maybe a B-17F.

Speaking of Forts, Gramps of FDG2 fame gave me the Gmax sources for the Fortress, was an unreleased shark tail IIRC. I had no idea about Gmax so never did much with it but study how they achieved things on the model (the main reason he gave it to me). He pretty much said I could do what I wanted with it (will check), so if any body would like to see it through to completion we could discuss. I don't think it had a VC, he suggested using one from one of his later models.

If someone is interested I'll dig through my backups and try and find it.

Jamie

Cool, will go digging. I mentioned this years ago, but no-one answered the call, there were not any Gmaxers around back then IIRC.

Would be nice to see it come to something if I can find it.

Jamie

I'm sure at one time I looked into the FDG2 B-17s for CFS1 to CFS2. If I'm recalling right FDG2 B-17s wheren't multi LOD and I ended up mkaing my own AI B-17 and dressing it with a Sopwith Chameleon/FDG2 textures (the B-17F above)

Could swear the FDG2 forts were Multi-LOD, could be mistaken though. Have found the files, including the interior source for a latter model. Even if it was player only, it would be nice to have.

Jamie

I'm sure Allen can make one for both. What version was used for the B-17s SARs. The one that had the boat attached underneath.

Have just checked the CFS2 FDG2 Forts and all versions have 6-LODs, the FS9 versions may or may not? The LODs seem very decent at that.

The models I have sources for are B-17D exterior and an interior for unknown later model.

Jamie.

Could be that the LODs where still to high in polygon count for my liking. I like to keep aircraft close to stock as possible.

Prob B-17Gs with the chin tur ripped off.

Cool, you know better than me, I've only done one (two actually, but that's not really apt) plane and nobody ever commented on it's performance as a player aircraft, AI or as LOD/FPS point of view. So I have no frame of reference.

kind regards,
Jamie

For those interested*, Anthony (Gramps) said the exterior model was finished (or as near as dammit), so guessing it was texture mapped too. I'm guessing the mapping and/or tex names were the same or similar to the later marks. Further than this I can't really help, I only ever loaded the blank model into Gmax to study it, never bothered with the texs.

Jamie

*parties interested have been filled, unless they retract no others will be considered at this time. I will leave it up to them to pass the baton if they see fit. Does that seem okay?

I have obviously stirred some dust, but I think that it's looking like the pictures shown, however I think that I saw a sigle machinegun in the nose,is it possible that the bombaimer had a doubble job as a front gunner?
Killer Svend:wavey:

Did B-17Fs have the chin turrets fitted later? I know the Gs had chin turrets fitted to them on the production line, but did some Fs have them added on as a field modification?

The machinegun I saw was not at the chin but near the center of the glass cone aming direct forward. (was it a machinegun or something else?)

100th Bomb Group (Heavy) became active in Jun '43. They only used B17F & B17G in Europe whilst part of 8th AF.

Google "B17F nose gun" & you'll see it was very common for the 8th AF B17Fs to have at least one 50 cal at the apex of the nose, the glazing had a horizontal crossbar.:dispirited:

It was the later "G" model (or v.late Vega built B17Fs) that had a one-piece perspex glazed nose with twin 50's underneath it.
