SF8 Port-Over to FSX

I have finished the process, as described by Björn Kesten in his update package, of transferring the SF8 F-86 (one of the absolute finest freeware aircraft models you're going to see for FS9) into FSX and everything worked just as his write-up said it would. I have no issues with appearance, or with about 99% of the performance. My only "gripe" is the inability to extend the speed brakes from the 2D cockpit, which I prefer to fly with in this jet. The speed brake function does work in the VC, however, it is necessary to use the mouse to actually drag the lever on the throttle quadrant back; my assigned joystick button, and even the keyboard key for spoiler extension, are both non-functional re: this issue. I can click on the 2D joystick button for spoiler extension, and the sliding switch will move, however, nothing happens. This function is reserved only to the VC. I've checked out the panel.cfg file for the FSX aircraft but can't seem to find the speed brake switch listed in the file. Is there a workaround for this hex, or is it just something you've got to grin 'n bear due to its being a port-over?

Where can we find the "Update Package" you mention? Is it on a private website or is it available here, Flightsim.com, AVSim.com?

I'm still trying to find that sf86 thread on this site.
EDIT: Found it. However, Hansi was looking into a similar speed brake issue back in 2011, I think, and I never saw anything else about it on that forum. The last post on the forum dates from 2011 and five years is a long time for that to be dormant. Interestingly, my panel.cfg file for the FSX F-86 read as follows when I opened it:

[Window11]
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
size_mm=100,100
window_size=0.15
type=SPECIAL
position=0
visible=0
zorder=100
nomenu=1
ident=10011

gauge00=SF8_F86!Display, 0, 0, 100, 100

vice what I saw in the thread and which I have now in put into my own panel.cfg file and will try in a little while. Maybe this will fix the speed brake bug:

[Window11]
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
size_mm=100,100
window_size_ratio=1.000
position=0
visible=0
ident=10011
nomenu=1
window_size= 0.140, 0.150
window_pos= 0.000, 0.000
zorder=100
type=SPECIAL
gauge00=SF8_F86!Display, 0,0,100,100

This is for the gear/flap/SB info that was displayed in red in the upper left corner of the screen in FS9.

Well, I thought it was going to work in P3D_3.2, however, just as I've found with other FS9 aircraft. . .it soon locked up the sim and CTD. One bright spot, however short lived was that the speedbrakes worked with the programmed button on my CH Throttle, lol. I don't use 2D panels anymore so I didn't try there and I didn't get to try the handle in the VC. Back to FSX I guess.

Currently flying from Loring Int'l to McGuire AFB. Everything seems to work fine to include the speed brakes. Been a long time (3yrs or more) since I flew this Jet so I failed to remember to get the gears up before hitting 185kts. I'll have to alert McGuire to have the Crash Trucks on hand, lol

Guys, thanks for posting this update. I didn't even know it existed. I now have this outstanding addon flying again in FSX. Many thanks.

Found the fix for the speed brakes - sort of. The aircraft no longer recognizes joystick button input for the speed brakes, I tried changing the assigned button and using the keyboard "spoiler activation" ("/") key as well, it ignored both. However, I discovered it's clickable in the 2d cockpit using the sliding switch on top of the thrust lever. Closing the speed brake required placing the cursor well above the speed brake switch, however, it will close when commanded. This is a minor hassle as it requires precise cursor placement at times when your workload in the cockpit can be a bit much, but, again, not much that can be done about it, I'm afraid. That was the only real gripe I had re: flying this thing in FSX. In the VC I'm still belabored by that huge black reticle on the gunsight, and I checked out each of the previous posts to determine how you get rid of that thing but, sorry, didn't find any reference as to how that's done.

At least, as some of you have happily posted in this thread, you've found this jewel can be flown in FSX, and very successfully, too.

It's just a fixed-gear F-86 - the training version!

I remember in 1976 when we got one of these things from some kids' playground somewhere that was supposed to be rehabbed and posted as a gate guard at the base. It did get a new windscreen and canopy before it got to the base and because we were OMS we were given the job of cleaning it up for proper painting. It took a lot of "Mothers" polish and some elbow grease but we had it shining like a new silver dollar when we finished with it.

I'm wondering what's different in my setup that allows the Speed Brakes to work in the VC/with the keyboard and also with the programmed button on my CH Throttle?

I can only work the speed brakes thru the throttle thumb switch in the vc, Falcon. I'm curious also.... It can be a real job to stabilize things enough to work them in flight. Not complaining though, as I've missed this aircraft very much for a long time...

I discovered last night the sf86 thread here at SOH which is referenced in the update readme is still accessible although, as I recall, nothing has been posted on it since 2011. I'm wondering if this info we're sharing about the speed brake issue should be placed over there as well. Not sure if it would matter, though. It was a bugbear to some folks at that time and someone at the SF86 site, or connected to it, was supposed to be researching it. There has been no further news since 2011.

EDIT: I'm running a Logitech Extreme3D Pro joystick, W7 Home Pro with FSX Acc Gold, which may be a factor.

I'm running Windows 10, a Saiteck Cyborg, and FSX plus Acceleration, but I've got like a gazillion addons running too... That is probably a factor in my case... Still thankful to you guys to have a chance to fly this beauty again. I'm happy as is. Anything else is icing on the cake....

Mine is also a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (Twistgrip), but for my setup, the speedbrake is mapped to one of the three buttons on the CH Pro Throttle. Maybe there's something with that which allows the speedbrake to work?

There you go, this makes the recticle invisible. I could let the yellow one be, but I don't like it because it's not collimated.

EDIT: I was in a hurry so I forgot to tell you to place these textures in the texture.shared folder, replacing the ones already there.

It does work, I think, lol. When using TrackIR I noticed that if I'm looking straight ahead it's gone, but if I look slightly left or slightly right it seems to reappear although seemingly more of a ghost image than a solid reticle. Thanks Stefano!

I've got the twistgrip, too. No TrackIR yet, but it's coming.
