An amazing story...Kamikaze Destroyer

I've often wondered about the first hand combat experiences of the picket line sailors and CAP fighters assigned to protect the Okinawa invasion forces. This book didn't just give me a narrative, front row seat, but it put me on the deck and even below the decks of the destroyer USS Hadley engaged in one of the most intense kamikaze vs ship fights in WW2.

The writer even takes to the air to give a taste of the daily mission of the often overwhelmed Hellcat and Corsair pilots who struggled to provide adequate fleet protection against the kamikaze swarms and recounts how they heroically contributed to the events of that day. As one veteran put it, "a record holding Kamikaze battle score, and the long, nearly 2 month tow through a Typhoon from Okinawa to Saipan, and continuing under tow to Eniwetok and Pearl, to San Francisco Naval Shipyard, only to be scrapped due to the extensive Kamikaze battle damage."
