As Matthew Approaches

Good morning fellow simmers,

As this day opens I have just a few things to finish up before the mid-afternoon, evening and "over-night-mare" approaches.
I have to cover my two sliding glass doors with my plywood sheets, (the last two Home Depot had).
I have to cover the windows four windows at greatest risk.
I have to lash my recycling and garbage bins to the fence between our shade trees and the house on the west side of the house.
Other than these few things, which can be completed by noon, we are ready.

This is the first recorded Cat 4 hurricane to ever reach the space coast side of Florida and Melbourne-Cocoa Beach-Cape Canaveral-Titusville looks like the cross hairs of Matthew's aim.

I'm not sure where Ickie and our Sim-outhouse server are located, but the entire state could suffer the effects of this storm with power outages.
I will check back with you all tonight, if I have electricity, or on my laptop with my iPhone as personal hot spot, if Ickie and the server are still powered up.

I'm upstream of the storm in Yorktown VA on the Chesapeake Bay and anticipating a lot of rain by Sunday. If Mathew swings north before coming ashore, we will get hurricane force wind too. Good luck to you DD!

Stay safe DD. I just spent most of yesterday down on the southern NC coast trying to get things as ship shape as I could make them. It looked for a while like this one would be a repeat of Fran in '96 when Wilmington took a bulls eye at the beach and danged if the blasted thing didn't follow me as I hightailed it up I-40 and pop us in Raleigh too. Now it appears we might be spared. I feel for you. The anxiety is excruciating, and living with out power for a week is nothing I would recommend to anyone. Been there, done that. Those guy's from the power companies will always have my respect. They came to NC from all over the southeast to help us get back to normal. The crew in my neighborhood was from Ohio.

All the best.

Devildog73,

I'll check in via email and Facebook to see how you're doing. Stay safe, my friend. God bless and good luck. :wavey:

DD,

Keep safe, my friend. My daughter and her family are by Jacksonville. Keeping my fingers crossed for all of you.

Worthless,

We have a generator and gasoline with plenty of battery powered lights. Have lots of water and 6 cars full of gasoline if we need to travel west to get more supplies if power is out for extended period of time.

Had on corn snake taking shelter in the garage this evening.

Two frogs up in the rafters of our patio roof.

So far so good.

I'll touch base in the AM.

DD

Sounds like you are as prepared as you can be, and much better than I was. I was up all night and I didn't have a generator. I bet we lost more than 10,000 trees around this town. Cars weren't much good with all the roads blocked. Power lines down all over. The city had to set up 4 or 5 sights all around town to dispose of all the trees. They were still shredding them for months after the storm. I'll be checking in to see how things are in the AM. Good Luck!

Yes, and I'm saying a prayer for you and yours as well as for all the folks in FL, GA and SC.

Weather

We Brits like to moan about the weather and we've had some bad floods lately but you guys in the US get WEATHER - so I hope you're all safe and well

Good morning,

The last status updates I have were 9:30pm last night, and 7:10am this morning. As of this morning, he was secure and dry. Fingers crossed and prayers sent that this remains the status quo. :encouragement:

The latest radar maps show the eye still off the coast, so far. Worst wind is generally at the 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock (NE) side. So if this storm will just stay at sea, we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

Hey guys.

Just heard from Devildog73 this morning. No water damage, some minor debris, no broken windows, and everyone is okay. He thinks he should be cleaned up by Monday. :applause:

That's good to hear. :applause: My turn: We are expecting 5-8 inches of rain and wind gusts up to 50 mph (80 KPH) tonight. Knowing this region as I do, I expect power outages.

Yeah, you elder cousins sure picked a doosey of a place to set down colonies!!!

And then wanted to fight us to keep 'em!

But, as families do, we are still friends for life.

Got to tell you, the wind during the height of the hurricane was intense. Not as bad as some tornadoes I have been near, but bad none the less.

We were blessed. We had only yard debris to clean up.

Our pool was full of branches and leaves, but I have all of the big stuff out of the pool.

I picked up or mulched the smaller stuff in the yards today.

I will vacuum the pool out tomorrow and put extra chlorine in to shock the bacteria and have the water tested.

Most of our community's traffic lights are back functioning.

Man, the number of drivers who do not know that a non-functioning traffic light becomes a 4-way STOP intersection amazes me!!!!!:banghead::banghead:

Hello people, it is in the Rules of the Road. Read and understand it.

So, instead of patrolling neighborhoods keeping people and property safe, our LEO had to stand in several intersections around town to keep Bozos from running into each other where traffic lights were without power.

That's interesting. Around our way when the lights are out, I'm amazed by how civil and considerate the traffic normally is - most of the time it flows better and safer than with traffic lights functioning, which, given the generally poor standard of driving in these parts, is doubly amazing - perhaps it's a question of survival.......... Glad to hear all is OK - the news out in West Australia is that we can expect up to 6 Cyclones making landfall this summer as opposed to the 1 from last year. Happy happy, joy joy.........
