MS missed this

On-line FS is not for me. Besides flying, my next best amusement with FS is refining the flight characteristics of the models. Some are almost perfect, but some other require extensive work and flight testing in order to get somehow close to the original specs of the airplane.

In doing so I have realized how a powerful tool for teaching flight dynamics, FS can be.
The .air & .cfg files give access to hundreds parameters - some geometric, some dynamic - whose influence over the behavior of the airplane can be then assessed with the simulated flight.
Forty years ago, when I attended the Aeronautical Engineering college, everything had to be figured out with math and formulae, and visualization of the effects of each parameter was a fantasy exercise; today with home simulator every student could quickly realize the consequences of an altered MoI, an offset CoG, or a different inlet area.

What I am saying is that MS instead of shutting down FS development could have considered other ways to use it and sell it (how many Aeronautical Engineering Schools / Students are there in the world?).
It would probably have implied a more realistic utilization of certain paremeters within FS, as well as a (limited) development of an adequate user interface, but in my opinion it could have been worth the effort (and made thousands of simmers happy!).

I totally agree for myself i love repainting FS aircraft & it seems M$ want to try and standardise Flight sims "FUN" factor & this is pretty much impossible give the varity of a product like Flightsim and this one size fits all mentality i think will be there undoing...The content for FS is now at such a point where the only thing that is needed is a core Engine/OS if someone with the skill where to come along and build such a core engine that was compatible with FSX's file format/meshes and landclass they could pretty much pull the rug from under M$

imagine say $50 for a new rendering engine that has support for all your FSX content but takes advantage of GPU hardware/advanced shader effects as well and GPU physics for a more advanced flight model a full SDK for payware/freeware community support I think users & 3rd party dev's would flock to it like bees to honey

Yep...

I myself even see FS9 as still having much sustainable life left in it, and updated 'variants' of FSX is very much possible, but it seems like it was more proper to redesign everything. One 'could have' also kept updating the 'existing' platforms.

Thats my humble two cents..

The beauty of it is that you would have 'multiple platforms' of simulators, humming along with sales.

In some European countries, CFS1 and CFS2 are still being sold and sell as new products to people that have not seen them before. These product lines run amazingly well on the new computers that have come out in the past year, so they are almost guaranteed to be good runners performance wise.

Having FS9, FSX, and FS11 running as all product lines of Aces would have been interesting to see...

but.... oh well.. .

Sorry, I have more..

Now that its obvious that windows has lost face with the world public as a OS manufacturer/designer, and that directX is a flop (dx10), I think it would be in their best interest that if Aces were still running, that they should be allowed to base their sim engine(s) on whatever they feel is proper, such as OpenGL. I also think they should be acting as a modern gaming company and make a version for Mac as well. Why not. The only thing Aces would be doing is making more money, and their sim runs faster.

Dang.. Thats 2 more 'humble' cents.. :d

Bill, I've always wondered why MS didn't expand its development beyond the primary product, the flightsim itself. They would produce FS9 and then not do any "expansion packs", leaving that niche to 3rd party developers.

Granted with FSX they released Accelleration, but I've always wondered why they didn't capitalize more on the expansion side of the product. Thank goodness they provided all of the tools needed so developers like yourself and others could soldier-on with a/c and sceneries!

I wonder if it was because they were more interested in the next version of FS or if they saw the expansion development as not having the return on investment that was needed.

:focus:

I insist saying that MS should have pushed sales of F Sim instead of shutting it down (at least here in Italy, I have never seen an ad for Flight Simulator).

In my opinion, finding other types of customers (i.e. students) for a FS based teaching tool, could have been a viable option with a huge sales potential.

Folks... FS development is shut down because of economics.

People have less disposable income during this financial crisis and that means that development of new products that people won't buy is going to be frozen. Computer software, which requires an installed base of computers to run are even more deeply affected. If folks won't upgrade computers then you have no customers for the software that requires the new hardware!

I'm sure that FS development will be back, once the financial situation means that there are potential customers in sufficient numbers to warrant the investment.

The most popular OS in the world, by an absolutely massive margin, and a part of it that's only just coming into full support.

I'm afraid that I'd like to see some evidence to back that statement up, Bill, as well! Especially seeing as everyone I know who has tried Windows 7 has said they like it so far (and most of them went straight to it from XP, so it's not just "anything's better than Vista". ;))

I don't try to play devil's advocate; it just happens. :help:

Anyway: I think the condition of FSX even now is poor and borderline unacceptable. I would never tell anyone from ACES that they deserved a pat on the back for FSX. While I appreciate flightsim development in general, noone else gets kudos for work that comes out wrong no matter the intent OR effort.

Now on to my second and more relevant opinion: I LOVE Vista. I've never had a single problem with it. I've gone through it and optimised it, and it's lightning fast. It looks good and works even better; better for me than anything else has. In fact, I'm actually afraid to update with any service packs for fear of screwing it up.:medals:

Im not saying anything bad about XP or Win7. I love XP. I think the entire vista thing was a catastrophe, but thats my view point. One of the reasons I went to Mac was it can load XP. None of the other comptuers support it and decline coverage of their products if XP was installed on them. Mac doesnt. :d (Found out Mac was one awesome OS in the mean time).

Its all about freedom of choice. If people love vista, awesome! If people love XP, awesome! If people love Mac, awesome! (same with linux and the others).

I hope Win7 is successful and does amazingly well. I hope its fast, stable, and cool.

Where did you see that, Bill, :icon_lol: ? Here, for example, you cannot buy the CFS-1. But the CFS 2 and 3, as well as FS2002, are sold for approx. 5$. The rest is priced exactly as everywhere else. Iam sure that in other "some European contries" the pricing is exactly the same. The companies want the players to buy a new hardware, don't they ?

Windows 7 so far on my test system is silly good.

Ive yet to insert a Disc and its found 99% of the drivers needed for the machine.

Good news for an IT tech who's fed up of random driver discs :friday:

I'm not sure you can call DX10 a flop as a) it's free and b) it just kind of turns up in Vista/7 anyway.

Actually, i just installed Windows 7 beta and am reinstalling fsx on top of it. When i ran dxdiag it reported that the direct X version was 11. now i'm crossing my fingers because there appears to be an activation problem with fsx running on windows 7 on my machine, and i cant help but wonder, with all the improvements made to the OS in windows 7 ( yes, it really is not a bad litle os at all. and amazingly fast compared to vista ) if there is something in flight sim that is an insurmountable killer, keeping it from running.

Warchild, FSX runs fine in Win 7 on my machine, think I may even have gained a few fps (dual boot on the same machine as XP so it's identical hardware). I don't think I did anything clever installing FSX either, I have previously had to reset the activation code by ringing the number that comes up, I think there's a limited number of installs you can do before that happens which with the number of times I rebuild my machine doesn't take long!
