An Immelmann In A B-47

Lt. Colonel Edgar Lewis served 23 years in the Air Force, then served 22 years with the FAA. Asked to choose his favorite aircraft, Lewis replied, “I didn’t have one. But if forced to choose, I’d say the B-47. To tell you the truth, we did some pretty stupid things in that aircraft, like pulling an Immelmann. (A half loop followed by a half roll, resulting in level flight in the opposite direction). We lost some guys doing that, pulling straight up in a B-47. The stress could pull the wings off.”

Nice story. Being in SAC at the time I saw plenty of discrimination.

i believe that the Immelmann was SOP for the B-47 when doing a toss bombing. Don't know if any crashed from it but it was hard on the structure. The 47 was a tough aircraft to flyin any circumstances.

BTW, just got the Vituality B-47 V2 on sale at pcpilot.with the discounts only came to about $6.

Great story, P. I've heard about pilots doing some crazy things in a B-47 but the Immelmann maneuver would certainly take the airframe to it's limits... Despite its size tho, the B-47 was a nimble aircraft and the pilots who flew her often said that it handled a lot like a big fighter, rather than a bomber. I have the Virtavia model for FS9 but I don't think I'll be attempting an Immelmann in it any time soon.... prolly crash if I did.

it was standard procedure in the B-47 to toss bomb using the immelmann. However it was so hard on the airframe that SAC stopped doing it after a few came back with wrinkled skin.
