Three Arcane Inquiries to Refresh My Learning Curve…

Cfs2 Obsessive upon release but total down-time since I went Win XP years back (seemingly insoluble conflicts). Now she’s flying high again after weeks of tweaking ‘above my kin’. Added skins, screens & mods including a few of my own… YET: three points NAG me. I could have broken these into three separate posts… but then I’d come off a Nag myself. Can anyone clear up any of these for me?

1- Cruising Altitude- Just wondering if there’s a general consensus on a ‘Normal’, or average, Cruising Altitude for most of you when flying unmolested between waypoints in cfs2. Do you adjust higher when expecting enemy fighters or lower when targeting enemy ships? Just looking for any tips.

2- New Goal- Occasionally I find a ‘New Goal’ or ‘Goals’ pop up between waypoints in cfs2 which include one or more Friendly Units (listed by name) followed by an “S”. What’s up? Only thing I can assume is that I’m being instructed to protect these particular ships or aircraft. Am I correct, or way off base here? Appreciate any clarification on this.

3- Splash Screen Text Modification- Is there any way to modify the text that appears on the various splash screens, out screens, etc.? Thinking particularly of the Ranks as labeled on the ‘Pilot Details’ screen. As a former jarhead I’ve already taken the liberty of replacing the Naval epaulette rank insignias with .bmps of their Marine Corps equivalents, but I’m still stuck with the text description of ‘Ensign, Lt. Commander’, etc. Like to change the wording to describe the appropriate Marine Air Corps ranks… but I very much fear text modification in cfs2 is simply not practical. Certainly I can’t locate them in the files. No way, right?

Thanks for your attention, and I’d be grateful for any response.

1. I always set mine in MB to between 5 and 10000 ft. :engel016:

2. Hit M and select goals. The new, previously hidden goals are written there and they vary. You may be called upon to destroy a specific enemy target or protect a friendly.

3. Don't know. I'm an old Army Puke (NCO)... I just live with it. :applause:

4. Please select a larger font. Some of us have (old) eyes and need all the help we can get.

Thanks, Shadow. I'll increase that font size right away. I'm down to glasses now myself. Hope this does it.

For fighter sweep, ...18-22,000 ft.

Higher (~24k+) makes it hard to keep up w/ the AI flights.
Lower, ...and you aught'a be lunch for someone...

For attack missions, ...10-12k for attack A/C, ...fighter cover at ~5k and ~15-18k.

For intercept missions, ...staggered from 5-20k at ~3-5k intervals.

Unless you take lethal damage at 150 feet AGL in a shallow dive. It just might be a good idea to try claiming some of that useless airspace before you hit the silk...;) Always good for avoiding bellies and ditches when possible.

"3- Splash Screen Text Modification- .....No way, right?"

Yes way...there are a few UIRES replacements around for the stock stuff, like a USAAF kit and i think a USMC kit too. But you could use the USAAC kit for WW2 Marine pilot ranking as well. There are also a couple of paint kit programs that allow you to edit text for CFS2 UIRES bmps.

Ajax (SOH member) is the guy you want to talk to about UIRES customizing. He's done a lot of addons in this area. Send him a PM and pick his brain for ideas and techniques.

Tradin' Airspeed for Altitude, ...and a pulse, ...is ALWAYS recommended.

Avoid RDT... (Rapid Deceleration Trauma)

The faint memory of my flight instructor’s voice whispers to me… “Height is safety; it’s the ground that kills you.” Of course, he wasn’t speaking of combat.

Sounds great; thanks for the tip. I’ve done enough Googling in the past weeks to know any USMC or USAFF kits are not readily located, but I’ll definitely give Ajax a PM re: those or general cfs2 UIRES paint kits. Perhaps he can point me in the right direction.
