Departing from NAS Cecil on detachment

It was a common sight. A C-9B, parked at the NAS Cecil Field Transient Line, for transporting squadron personnel on detachment to NAS Roosevelt Roads, Fallon, Key West, or Nellis AFB.

Went on them several times. NC

Same here when I didn't luck out to fly our squadron birds up to Norfolk from Jax. One of my last C-9 flights we had an engine fail short final into NS Norfolk (figured it was just standard Navy landing).
 
Looks like you had the "lap of luxury", Chief. This was our transport from NAS Whidbey Is. to NAS JAX in 1969 Med cruise on Sara CVA 60 out of Mayport, Fla. Bad case of buttitis after that trip!

Had a Chief AP at the controls.

By 1977 that carrier was know as the "Sucking Sixty from Dixie"! My first trip to her was via C-9 from Cecil to Rosie Roads and then COD on board. Hell of a way to get your ship indoc.

She was the sucking sixty from Dixie in '69, too! Our berthing compartment was just below the end of the forward CATS. I still feel like I'm on fire after standing on the side of Tilly during launch. Those Phantoms and Viggies could flat incinerate you.

I had also heard the Sara was referred to as the "Sinking Sara" as she almost sank at the dock at Yokosuka?

I hated behind behind Intruders on deck. Their exhausts were just the right angle to blow your as s down the deck. NC
