A few questions

Hi, I just ordered cfs2 and am wondering about some things.

1. It looks like there's no official patch. Is this right?

2. It is recommended to do several installs for Europe, the Med, etc. Why is this necessary? They are all different parts of the world. Why not just run them in one install?

3. I understand FS2000 scenery and aircraft will work. How about FS2002 or FS2004?

4. The recommended specs are very low compared to today's standard. I have a p4 3gig with a geforce 6200 256 meg. So I assume it will run everything just fine?

Thanks for any help.

Rich12545,

On behalf of all CFS2 members, welcome to the club!

To answer your questions, I will be as specific as I can.

1) No, there is no "official" patch. CFS2 runs great "out of the box," but there is a myriad of updates, aircraft, ships, and other enhancements that will increase the playability and scope of CFS2 to levels that will boggle the mind. We can help you get up to speed on this.

2) The reason for multiple installs is that CFS2 has a limit of 100 aircraft (including "skins," or aircraft repaints) that can be in the AIRCRAFT folder of your install without causing error issues. This also applies for ships in the SHIPS folder.

You will quickly realize that that this aircraft limit can be reached VERY quickly. In addition, many aircraft were used in one theatre, but not another. (Yakovlev Yak-9s were not used in New Guinea, for example) By making more than one install, you can make the aircraft, scenery, and missions theatre-specific.

3) Yes, it can be used. One of our members, Rhumbaflappy, has just created a set of global mesh that coveres the entire world, which blows stock elevation mesh, even FS2004 mesh, completely out of the water.

4) Yes, your computer will be able to run CFS2 "maxed out" without breaking a sweat. I have a nearly identical machine.

Thanks very much.

That all sounds very good. I've been flying fs2004 for a couple of years and am looking forward to a combat sim. I'll be downloading stuff over the next few days while waiting for it to arrive.

Rich12545,

Excellent. We are here to answer any questions you might have. I am one of the resident staff junkies, I check in several times a day. Other members of this forum will be happy to provide advice on any question you might have, from where to find certain aircraft to how to install a mission or campaign.

The more you ask, the more you learn! :typing:

Number 3. I understand FS2000 scenery and aircraft will work. How about FS2002 or FS2004?

Let's be very clear on this one, Rich, as far as FS aircraft are concerned. In CFS2 the majority of FS models won't work at all in their stock form. Only a rare few addon models were designed to have tri-sim capability to function in CFS2/FS2002/FS2004. You'll stumble across them occassionally in search of others. But for the most part, you'll need to use conversion utilities and other tools in order to make an FS model compatible with CFS2. Don't even think about this facet of FS-to-CFS2 portables yet, because its a highly complicated work that requires some experience with the inner workings of CFS2 3D models, panels, gauges, weapons, damage profiles and flight modeling to make successful conversions. As you learn these aspects of your new sim-toy better over time, in working with CFS2 native models, you'll stand a much better chance of pulling off good FS conversions with minimal pain and anguish.

I can't stress this enough...please take some time studying and experimenting with ALL the inner workings of the sim's native models (including addons) before attempting FS2002/2004 model conversions. It'll save both you and those who try to assist you a lot of headaches.

:welcome:

I will add to what bearcat just said.

GO SLOW on adding stuff.

CFS2 is VERY expandable, one or two items at a time. It is very finicky when adding too many items at once.

I have to read the included readme files a couple of times very slowly to actually let it all sink in to my pea brain so that I get it right. Every once in a while I have ask these guys what I did wrong. Usually the fix is very simple. A lot of the time it is just finding a missing object that needs to be installed or a file that needs to be deleted.

I appreciate all the advice in going slow. And I don't think I'll ever get to where I convert aircraft.

What I'll be looking to do first is set up 4 folders. One for civilian flying and one for each theater. The way to do this is to copy the entire game to another folder 3 times, is that right?

Then I'll add the basics. Mesh, textures, and landclass for each. Then cfs2 aircraft and missions/campaigns for each. Then I'll go real slow adding other stuff.

For civilian aircraft I found a beaver at flightsim in fs2000 that looks good. And a couple of others. Will fs2002 scenery work in cfs2?

Welcome to the Basement Rich.

FS2002 scenery...for the most part...will not work in CFS2. There are a few packages that were built to work in CFS2 and FS2002...but just a few.

As far as using CFS2 for civilian flying....you will find yourself disappointed with that. There is a very limited number of civilian aircraft available for CFS2, and no civilian airports. CFS2 only comes with Pacific Theater air strips....nothing else....the world is there in terms of land and water, but no citites, no air ports. A lot of the FS2000 scenery can be used in CFS2, but there are issues with elevations that sometimes look odd.

A good number of the FS2000 planes will work in CFS2. Some will drop right in and fly just fine, others will require some conversion work.

I initially only had CFS2, and was spending a great deal of time converting civilian and early commerical aircraft to work in CFS2, and was creating some non-military airports for use in CFS2 (lost all that in a recent HD snafu). If you have FS2004, I would suggest using that for your civilian and GA flying and use CFS2 for combat simulation flying.

Thanks for that info. FS2004 doesn't really work with my hardware now (after my computer crashed I got this one and I can't really update). It has this awful shimmering that can be corrected by antialias but that reduces the frame rates too much. So I'm looking at civilian flying with an older sim. Maybe I'll look into fs2002. And I read an article in flightsim where a guy dropped fs2000 into cfs2 and used that for his civilian flying (this was several years ago). So maybe I'll look into that. I've been checking out cfs2 here at simouthouse for over a year and this convinced me to finally get it.

On multiple installs, I have found the old DOS note of "REM"(space)folder works really well.
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/rem Combat Flight Simulator 2
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/ETO/rem Combat Flight Simulator 2
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/MTO/rem Combat Flight Simulator 2
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/PTO/rem Combat Flight Simulator 2

This way, you can run install each time from the CDs/DVD to the new folder.
Each new install add "rem" space to the last install and rerun the install to the next location.
Once completed just remove the "rem" and space on all of them and add shortcuts to your desktop for each.

IMPORTANT: When asked if you want to create a shortcut to the desktop during install, click "NO".

My desktop has CFS2 icons for CFS2, CFS2 MB, CFS2 ETO, CFS2 ETO MB, etc through all installs.

All work fine.

I read that article....can't remember who did it. Very detailed instructions. I have thought about finding a copy of Fs2000 so I could merge the two and have one sim that can be used for civil flying and combat flying.

Here is a link to the article.
http://www.flightsim.com/main/howto/fs2001.htm

I don't think I would do it in one install because there are so many differences between the graphics even in different parts of the world for combat flying. And there are aircraft limitations. And the weather. For civilian flying I'm mostly interested in bush flying from Washington State and north to BC and AK so I think it would work very well. You can get fs2000 pretty cheap through ebay.
