I downloaded Lowengrin's Dynamic Campaign Generator and am trying to install it. The install info is based upon unzipping it with WinZip. I don't use WinZip. It got too bloated for me. I use 7Zip, so can someone tell what folders in CFS2 the files/folders in DCG go into? :help:

Rich, my problem isn't my unzipper, 7Zip, it'll unzip most anything. I orginally got it cuz it handles CAB files. I've got the DCG unzipped into a folder okay, but where some of the files go defeats me. If instructions aren't explicit, I sometimes end up screwing up the job. By the way, we're practically neighbors. I live a little further north of Spokane than you live south. Colville. My dad used to fish Sprague Lake occasionally. I grew up in Spokane.

It's a small world. :ernae:
I ordered cfs2 and it should be here in a few days. I'll take a look at the dcg (was going to anyway) and see what I can figure out. It'll be this weekend though.

waco, I took a look at the dcg site and here's how it looks.

Put DCGV57.exe and dcg.ini in the main cfs2 folder.
Make a folder entitled "dcg_campaign"
Make subfolders with the titles for each file that has the extension dcg and put each dcg file in the corresponding folder.
Put all files with the extension cmg in the game's campaign folder (I assume there is one)
That should do it.

Rich, let me tell you about small world. A few months ago I was sitting in the hospital waiting room in Chewelah. A guy sitting across the room saw my USAF retired hat and said he'd been AF, too. So we went over our itineraries and found out, much to our surprise, that we'd both been at the same base the same year at the tail end of the war. He flew A-7s and I worked on 'em. And we met over 3 decades later in a little town in Washington thousands of miles away across the pond. That's almost spooky.

Rich, thanx for the input. I'll try your plan and let you know what happens. I'm more of a hardware guy than software.

Guys,

make sure you have DCG version 6.32. Earlier versions have problems.

You need a main folder named dcg_campaigns inside your main CFS2 folder. The individual campaign folders go inside dcg_campaigns folder.

One more thing: DCG campaigns change as you fly missions. So you need to make and keep copies of all your out-of-the-box campaigns so you can start a campaign over if you want. The best way to do that is to copy and paste the dcg_campaigns folder back into your CFS2 main folder. Your computer should create a folder named "copy of dcg_campaigns". To start a campaign anew, you just copy the campaign folder inside the "copy of dcg_campaigns" folder, and paste it into your "dcg_campaigns" folder, letting the computer overwrite the "used" campaign of the same name. Then you're back to square 1 with that campaign.

One more thing: Some of the stock DCG campaigns start out with no aircraft in the squadrons, and add 1 aircraft to each squadron per mission. During this buildup phase, action will be sparse to nonexistent. So sparse some people think the campaign is not working. But the action will pick up as soon as the squadrons get built up.

Ettico, I've got v6.31. That close enuf?

Afraid not. 6.31 has a problem with it's shipping strike routine. Strikes fail to find their targets. Use the link I posted, and download version 6.32.

6.32 also has a couple of other minor improvements over 6.31. It's still not perfect. You will get an occasional corrupted mission. But I have a Qbasic program I'm planning to upload soon that finds and fixes the errors I know of that cause the corrupted missions.

DCG never got completely out of the beta development stage. People kept asking for changes. As the changes were done, other problems popped up. Lowengrin eventually lost interest and went on to IL2, but the final version is adequate, and is better with the changes and options my supplemental mission file editor does.

I would say that carrier battle simulation is 6.32's strong point. However, I've found a way to make it more adequate for land-based campaigns by reassigning some of the unneeded AI CAP flights DCG creates to escort duty.

Well guys, thanx. I finally got the DCG working. Took me 3 days, cuz my frustration level is low. I'm in an AVG mission right now. :ernae:

Congratulations, waco,

There are many addons available for CFS2, and most of them don't have self-installers. You'll get the hang of where to put folders and such.

Learning all the ins and outs of DCG is a project unto itself, although you can just stick to basics.:ernae:
