FSX installation help please

Duckie, a long time ago I moved all my scenery out of the Sim and onto a different drive (I have no SSD's just HDD's) so maybe there's more to your request than I'm reading in your post. Orbx is the only one I've never messed with so I don't know if it "must" be installed only to the Sim or if it can also be moved out to a separate drive. Anyway, I have everything aside from Orbx out of the Sim with no problems.

Thanks Ed. It can be done I'm just doing something wrong and need some help figuring out what it is.

That's Why

When I went out to buy new Laptops, needed a matching set for educational reasons, all I heard about was Windows 10 and its problems with FSX installed back then. In the past 4 years I thought that they had been ironed out but it seems not. P3D it seems likes Windows 10 but since I don't have it I don't know. When I will have to purchase a new PC and that is not any time soon by choice I will be so disappointed not to be able to find any that do not have Windows 10 or who knows what Windows X by that time. I believe there IS a new MS Operating System they are touting but it doesn't concern me not needing it or probably running it on the systems I have. I have Windows 7 64bit Professional and love it and so does my FSX and everything else I use thank you Lord, Amen. My tuppence.

You know, l felt pretty much the same as you. I’ve agonized for almost a year over Windows 7 support ending until I finally decided I was going to have to make the jump sooner or later. I decided sooner while my faculties were still reasonably intact and my physical abilities would not severely hinder my efforts.

Timing of the project wasn’t too bad, even though I kicked the project off in January with a couple recommended parts lists from a member here, then the pandemic hit. But that just made me do some more time to research and shop.

Since I’m retired and still had a good functioning PC there was no pressure for collecting all the parts. I took my time researching and shopping and with a couple minor exceptions was able to get everything I wanted for the build. Now, that doesn’t count physical assembly of my new PC nor the technical set up of Windows 10, again with help from the fine folks from SOH. It’s taken me about 2 1/2 days to get my FSX set up and running pretty well, of course with the help of some good folks here at SOH.

I believe about 25% or more of the time I’ve spent was due to my lack of recent experience. To be sure there have been some very frustrating moments involved with both the physical assembly and the software installation phases. I’m no techie and my last build in 2009 and it’s upgrade in 2014 were essentially maintenance free, not one part or system failure in all that time, and the 2014 upgraded machine is still chugging away albeit with an obsolete and unsupported OS. Someone with a little more tech savvy than me would fare some better. One thing good about this build, first time too, is I didn’t have to worry about working around hardware limitations. Still tweaking and getting use to the new stuff in Win 10 and will be for a while with a lot to learn yet. But FSX is in and for now I’m happy. Lots of scenery, planes, boats, environment and apps to (re)install to keep me busy over the next few weeks.

Duckie, (and anyone who may have a suggestion),Have you been able to add any addon sceneries? I moved the entire contents (86Gb) from my old computer to my new windows 10 computer and verified they are there. However, when selecting them to add in the game (settings>add area), as it normally should. I go to the folder select the scenery folder, and it then says no items match your search. Also, while I am here, after inserting acceleration disc, it never asked me for its activation code. Now, when i start FSX, i get "an unexpected error occurred preventing activation...) but i can still get in the game ok.Clearly there are some issues going on with the install, but before going back and doing it all over, was looking for some possible help/suggestions.Thanks,DekeNavy81

Deke, I’m not at MY sim my sim PC but I had the same issue with acceleration and there is a fix. Google the error and you should be able to find it. You’ll need to modify a registry entry. Then when you reboot you’ll get the registration screen for acceleration. The only scenery I’ve actually loaded is Orbx. Haven’t moved any adddon stuff yet.

Deke the acceleration fix is in this thread. Look above for “wellis’” post on the first page of this thread.
