Need help, choosing what DRAM to buy for my desktop

Ok, currently I have the following RAM installed in my desktop. The brand installed is XPG ADATA . My head is spinning, trying to figure out exactly what to buy to upgrade; not only brand, but specific model, etc.... I would really appreciate some advice! NC

Selecting the brand and type of RAM to buy is directly related to your CPU and motherboard Chief.

Could you tell us:


  • The motherboard you want to install it on
  • brand and type of your CPU
  • The amount of RAM you want to install

Make sure you put the new RAM in a "paired" slot that is paired to your current one.

If it is 16GB in a single slot; buy a 'nutter 16 GB and put it into the correct "paired" slot.

If you've got (2) 8 GB in (2) slots; get (2) 8 GB and put into the other (2) slots

This is a weird format; how did I do that... all I did was copy& paste !		4199.0 MHz





 
First step, determine the manufacturer, model number, and revision of your motherboard. With that information, go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and look for a list or table of RAM that is certified to work with your motherboard. The speed of the RAM is not always the determining factor in how well it will perform. Tight latency timings sometimes makes slightly slower RAM respond and operate faster than fast RAM with high latency.

16GB, and I would like to replace the existing DRAM and add additional memory for a total of 64GB (max for the motherboard)

My pleasure chief. The reason why I proposed the two is that I couldn't find out whether your motherboard would take sticks of 32 Gb. Sometimes there's not only the total capacity limit, but sometimes a limit to what every slot will take.

Intuitively though, I would go for the 2x32 GB solution as it is the fastest RAM of the two.

Any chance you could ask the guy who built your rig?

It is a company called IBUYPOWER, and from experience with having called them some time ago, they don't handle parts; just the entire system. My thought is to contact MSI (Micro-Star International) tomorrow, as they are the maker of the MB, along with Corsair, as I am sure they could provide answers? NC

Welcome to the post-Covid world. Global semi-conductor shortage means things like memory are in short supply and when you find it, expect to pay more.
By the way, on many motherboards, 2 sticks of RAM is faster and more efficient than 4, but some motherboards are equally fast and efficient regardless of configuration.

Thanks for that info! I had read that earlier, and ordered this from Amazon:

It will fit into my one remaining PCI-E slot, and allow me to use the ssd card. I plan to back up my C:, then install another ssd card in the dedicated M.2. Slot, and install files back to that. NC
