If the tree's are behind the smoke you see the smoke, if they are not you don't see the smoke.

They (the trees) weren't. Nothing obscuring the full view of the BBQ.

I examined all the files and saw no smoke effect attached - this one (BBQ BGL) hasn't any smoke animation - don't know which file is creating it.

Well..yeah... you are not in the same location I was in and I had the BBQ in plain unobstructed view, my view is different and no trees are in front.
Listen....I found a Utube tutorial that explains how to attach an effect to a blg using MCX. I will try to study that and see if I
can get same results as you did.......
 
I fixed it

I managed to add the smoke effect myself.. It's called adding an effect to a bgl file.

smoke... at same vantage point in your pic, over the top left side of the stearman wing? Your trees look different.
