New forum feedback.

I thought I'd start this thread so Dave and Huub don't get buried in PM's.
This is meant to be an "all swim" thread where everyone can get involved.

So far, overall, the new digs are GREAT. I'm still getting used to some of the new features but for the most part, its pretty easy to figure out.
Some constructive thoughts:

-Any chance we could also use the old emotes? This would clean up some of the shrapnel in the older threads and I miss the :wiggle: dude.

-File attachments are very easy to add, but will there be any guidelines on how is best to do it? For example, I might want to post a screenshot but I'd like to know which format (.jpg, .bmp, .png) works best and which file size is the most preferred. Likewise, when is it best to post an attachment vs updating a zip file in the archive? Let's say I upload a full texture set and two months later I notice a goof in one of the textures. A quick thread with the attached file might make more sense than doing an update to the full zip file. Likewise, someone else notices my goof and posts a correction. Personally, I would not mind this BUT I can see other folks not sharing the same view for their own valid reasons.

-What kind of attachments are going to give the Admins headaches? More to the point, aside from some obvious stuff, what shouldn't we post as attachments? I'm leaving this question vague for a good reason, now might be a good time to hash this stuff out.

I would think for screenshots or pics, using the .JPG format is less intrusive on the system. .BMP and .PNG are high in pixels.

Usually JPGs take up less space than PNG. Usually BMP is larger than a PNG. Saving an image as JPG will lose detail and/or colors depending on the compression. PNG will compress to make it smaller but is a lossless compression.

For screenshots I think JPG would take up less space on the server but if you want max detail stick with PNG. BMP as screen shot is pointless but useful if you doing testing/dev work on an aircraft/object and you want to quickly share the texture but make sure to delete the attachment once the final aircraft/object is uploaded to free up server space.

Dear all,

Thanks for opening this thread and welcome at the new forum. I realise it will take some time before I am used to the new look and I expect it will be the same for you. As we have been using the old software for over twenty years, it felt like an old coat. And we need to start using the new software to get familiar with it and become "at home" in it, like in our "old coat".

I would like to take the opportunity to point at a quite urgent challenge. We need to transfer the files form the old library to the new library. And I'm afraid there is no other way than to do this by hand.
See this thread: https://sim-outhouse.org/sohforums/threads/file-library-teams.135283/

Uploading files has never been my strongest point, nor my favourite activity, but I understand it simply has to happen and it has to happen in just a few months.

So I will start with moving my own uploads from the old to the new library. And I hope all other up-loaders are willing to to the same with their files.

There are also a lot of file which don't have an active owner anymore. Like for instance Piglet, NIgel Richards, MIlton Shupe, etc. I hope we will be able to find enough volunteers to move these files as well.

If you can and want to participate in this move, please replay to the link in the Dave's e-mail.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm not crazy about it but it's a lot better than it might have been. It's certainly not a disaster like the reworked FlightSim! We'll get used to it.
I have one item that's not critical but might be worth adding to the list of little things to think about after the big stuff is done.
I miss how in the old fora we could click a link over on the right side of a thread on the forum index page and go directly to the most recent post. As it is now we can go to the last page of the thread, but those pages are very long. It's not a big deal but maybe and hopefully it wouldn't be too much of a tweak to add that little feature.
Meanwhile, a big Thank You to all those who are doing all the work!

Just spotted something new. I saw a little bell icon on the menu bar and when I clicked it a list of "trophies" came up. Seems pointless and mildly annoying. If at some point we could use more server capacity, that might be a good thing to delete.

Be careful what you wish for, I've already won a free ham sandwich AND a restored 1957 Ford Thunderbird. :p

@Sbob emotes are on the to-do list. I tried to import them yesterday and the importer failed with an error message. I clicked in the wrong spot and lost the error message. I have to try again to see what went wrong. My guess is the names of all the emotes conflicts with existing emotes. If that's the case it's an easy fix to rename them.

As far as any other feature that may be deemed unnecessary just ignore them. Removing them is likely to break other forum functionality. I had to live with too many broken items on the old software. Mostly stuff Members didn't see but caused us a bunch of headaches.

Well im quite liking it, and i logged in first time with no issue's. i was thinking about using this opportunityto look over my old file's, sorting the good from the not so good, Is it a case of downloading from the old site and uploading here, or is it more involved?

As for the Trophies, ive been awarded 4, Cool

I agree with Ian. So far, so good. I just hope I haven't jinxed anything for anyone by mentioning it. 😉

I've moved the files I remember doing myself. I even consolidated one of them (Paul Clawson's Fokker XX airliner) so everyone has everything in one file.

I'm going to tackle some of the other files now, but I'm wondering how best to let people know things are moved over? I know there are not many FS2004 effects (18 or 20 I think?) which I could do by the end of the day if I don't have anything else with family pop up.

I know some were by Ickie, but Allen did a few as well, so I'm not sure if he's going to move his or if it's okay to just move them?

As for transfering, I've basically done what Ian asked about. Just downloaded to a temp folder I set up for the job. I made a text file for the "write-up" and also saved the image by opening in another tab then right-clicking and downloading. Once done, I just upload to the new site.

I've kept the folders organized just to know what I've moved already so I'm not duplicating someone elses job. For now I only have folders in my "temp" folder named the same as the categories in the new website (Resources???) so it's easier to figure where I put things and where to put them in the future as I move them over.

I've also searched for the "new" file just in case before downloading from the old site to help in preventing duplicate jobs.

For "tags" I've been using the original author, the aircraft make and/or model, my name, and other generic terms like "airliner" or such.

Any other tips/hints to make this less painful would be appreciated. Like Allen said yesterday: download, cry, sort files, cry some more, upload, repeat process. 😉

Like Jorge, ive just done a test upload with one of my old file's, everything seems ok, but im awaiting permission, other members seem to be uploading quite quickly, is this normal?

Before uploading anything that is not yours you need instructions and permissions to change the name of the file to the original uploaded. We are also trying to tackle one member doing one section to avoid duplication. If you would like to help please reply to the Library Teams thread. I will get you added to the list and send you the instructions.

I HAVE A SIMPLE QUESTION OR TWO. IN UPLOADING ADD-ONS IN THE NEW SITE THERE ARE TWO PLACES TO ADD EITHER A PICTURE OR THE UPLOAD FILE. IT DOESN'T IDENTIFY WHICH IS WHICH. I'VE BEEN UPLOADING THE PICTURE TO THE TOP FILE UPLOAD AND THE PLANE TO THE BOTTOM UPLOAD FILE. THESE HAVE MOSTLY BEEN CWDT STUFF WITH AUTOMATIC INSTALLERS ENDING IN THE DREADED .EXE. IT SAYS A THAT'S A NO NO JERRY BUT I SAVE IT ANYWAY. WHEN PEOPLE HAVE TRIED TO DOWNLOAD THEY GET A PICTURE OF THE PLANE. SO MAYBE I HAVE WASTED ALOT OF TIME. PLEASE HELP. THANKS.

Hi Warbirdlover, looks like you've got it upside down, i attach the zip to Type-upload file, and i copy/paste pic into description, and it automatically appears in Attach File's box underneath description, at least thats how it works for me :wavey:

As a simple flightsimmer I want to thank ALL OF YOU for keeping this great site alive and up-to-date!!
