LOD8 mesh for CFS2

Yes. LOD8 is trimmed to the watermasks to eliminate the need for most flattens in the ocean. The watermasks and LOD8 mesh are for CFS2 war areas only ( about a third of the planet ).

World sightseeing is probably best done from FS2004 or FSX.

This set is made for framerate speed in combat areas, while still giving a fair representation of SRTM-based reality.

LOD8 and water masks

ATT Rumbaflappy

I have installed LOD 8 below LOD 7 and below that the watermask set. Please take a look at this image and tell me what caused this and what to do to correct the scenery.the shoreline goes out of place when i activate the watermasks only.
cheers

The European covers east beyond the Caspian sea, west beyond the Azores, north to the pole ( not modeled ) and south well into the Sahara.

I didn't model the icepack because it changes according to the season, and might better be modeled in smaller regional ( LOD5-sized ) scenery if someone wishes to do this.

Dick

Great news, thanks again, you are probably sick of :icon29: by now so I suggest you have a couple of these :guinness: for a change of taste.

Hi dog1.

The LOD8 and LOD7 mesh can go into the same mesh folder... but separate folders are OK. I'm not sure what you mean by "below". In the scenery Library, the lower on the list means they are loaded firtst... in this case LOD7 should be lower than ( loaded before ) LOD8, if in separate folders.

As far as watermasking, They could also go into a single mesh folder, but separate folders are OK. I would place them in the Scenery Library as low as possible, so that more detailed watermasking ( such as SDC's work ) can be placed after them ( higher in the Library ).

If someone wants LOD7 mesh, LOD8 mesh and the new base watermasks in the same folder, place that all as low as you can in the Scenery Library, so others addons can overwrite these as needed. I like the idea of separate folders, as the LOD8 mesh could be deactivated through the Scenery Library, if a mission is taxing the framerates too much... LOD8 mesh will reduce framerates a bit, and LOD7 mesh still has a lot of detail suitable for combat. I didn't upload an LOD9 mesh becuase of further framerate taxing, quadrupling the filesize over LOD8, and it just didn't add enough detail to make it worthwhile.

The roads, streams and shorelines will not fit this masking. They should be deactivated if you use this masking, by renaming the default files in your "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator 2\SCENEDB\world" folder. The defaults can be deactivated by changing their filename extension to ',old' instead of '.bgl'

The files to change would be any file starting with "pac", such as "pac4020p.bgl". Also, I would deactivate any LOD9 default mesh... these are named as "??????9.bgl" the '9' before the extension is the key, like "palau9.bgl". I recommend this because the default mesh is not SRTM-based... we don't know what the Aces used. In some cases it may be misplaced.

Hey RF, ...

Lets KISS this thing (Keep It Simple, ...Sir) please.

On the priority list:

LOD8 mesh folder
LOD7 mesh folder
watermasking folder

Si or no?...

Thanks for the Great work.

Dick,
I'm sorry but I'm confused by the second, multi-folder picture you just posted. In post #25 above, you said
in this case LOD7 should be lower than ( loaded before ) LOD8, if in separate folders
yet in that picture the DEM8 folder has a lower priority number than the DEM7 folder, which makes it look as if it will be loaded before the DEM7 data. Perhaps you could clear the mists of confusion that are swirling around this subject in my head ...

Anyway, many, many thanks for all that you have done here. My copy of CFS2 arrived today, so I'm really looking forward to trying all this out as I try to build my many different installs of CFS2 and FS9,
best regards,
Ro
:help:

Lower ( down ) in the Scenery Library means it's loaded first. In the above example, Terrain, at priority 14 is lowest in the datastream, and is loaded first. Succeeding layers are loaded on top of it.

Scenery with Priority 1 will be loaded last, on top of all the other scenery, and will display over underlying layers. Itwill always show over what is underneath.

Because the new masks and mesh are terrain, they should be as low as possible. You want LOD7 below LOD8 mesh, so it is loaded before the LOD8.

All that said, the sim should be able to sort out the mesh, as it will display LOD8 when in range to display it, regardless the Scenery Library position.

It's more important that the watermasks are as low as possible, because better masking may become available, and that you would want loaded later in the datastream. For example, some may want to use Sander De Coq's European data on top of my mesh set, and that means it needs to be higher in the Scenery Library position, with the lower priority number.

The Scenery Library display is like a layer cake with the #1 priority on top of the other layers. Larger priority number means lower position and loaded earlier. #1 is always loaded last, and is always displayed.

The FS2002 Terrain SDK describes the datastream concerning LWM and VTP BGLs... the watermasks are LWM.

( Within a folder, the datastream is alphanumeric in order, which is why excludes usually need an odd name to insure they load first and delete the old data, with the new data loaded after them. )

Dick,
thank you muchly for taking the time to help me to understand that,

Stupid question here and maybe redundant, are these watermasks to replace those previous items of c2afrwater, c2eurwater, etc. or are these water COLOR textures and completely different doggies?
You are so prolific I am running out of titles to call the folders!:woot::ernae:

It might be easier to explain the hierarchy in saying that reading the structure is like reading some foreign languages. We normally read left to right and some read right to left. Here in the topsy-turvey MS world it is bottom to top! Just think BIZZARO!!!!!

"Here in the topsy-turvey MS world it is bottom to top! Just think BIZZARO!!!!!"

I'm glad you said it Fibber as I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought that. Almost akin to standing downtown and yelling to anyone who can here "I ain't too bright!" lol :faint:

Rhumbaflappy;
So as not to sound like a complete dolt on this subject, could you give a hint as to what the original zip file names of the items that are to be considered obsolete are?
I have things crossed referenced, under your name, to what I put in what folder and CRS as to what are "flattens and watermasks".
Are files such as Cseur and c2asia etc still relevant?:wavey:

Hi Fibber.

I don't think any of my earlier stuff is useful anymore.

The LOD8 mesh I uploaded should eliminate 90% of the need for flattens. And SDC's European stuff handles that area pretty well for now. The rest of the world land/water is covered by the new watermasks.

There is an old landmask fix for "tropical" asia around that might still be good.

Dick

Wow!

That is all that I can say:faint:

Rhumbaflappy you have completely rebuilt the CFS2 world.

I finally got it all installed, the water masks, the LOD 7 and LOD 8 mesh and I was blown away.
Try taking a flight out of Avu Avu airfield in the Solomons or over the Greek islands in the Med. Absolutely stunning.

Thank you for all the work that you did to make this happen.

Gavin

Fantastic

Thanks to Richard, Rami, and Stitz! I knew CFS2 could do this stuff!
I started a new ETO: added
watermasking, Lod7, Lod8
Stitz European Water and Textures
and voila:
the Gibraltar I havd been wanting for about 5 years!
Dedicated respectfully to the above gentlemen!
The landing strip is pretty basic (1938-before it was extended to the west), but if people are interested I can touch it up and upload it.

...more that to make a runway....

Hi all

Merlin, I happy that you see fully, concretly, the result that the rhumba's work recently done makes in the game.
About Gibraltar and the strait ...I'm finalizing a scenery that is the synthese of all the freeware stuff that the sim community have done during all these years. A scenery i've begun since five years around this rock ,the discovery of the lod9 mesh from srtm loaded in fs/cfs2,fssc for some flattens and other ,g2k for the ground modelling poly line landclass water landmask ,the MR's process for the airfied area ,and at the end the gsl and layout addition as last made by my patient friend Dombral that had prepared also some missions :) this scenery is the center and the master piece of a big in working and will come with some sceneries sisters named Oran/Mers el kebir/lasenia/port Lartigue Ceuta Casablanca Alger Dakkar Port lyautey and some others ,a north Africa campaign ...the sceneries done are Gibraltar 1940 and 1943 ,Oran/Mers el kebir/La senia ,Fort/Port Lyautey/Kenitra and in working Casa Dakkar and all the others ....
I known I already could upload some of no finished of these but only today I can say to myself that these completed are ready to up,cause before everyday there was always a thing that could be added....the fact is that a scenery is never finished......always a thing that could be added....
These scenery will be livered will all the background stuff ,South Spain Morocco Algeria areas partialy covered some lod8 with roads rivers lake landclass etc....today I'm just thinking about to adapt the size ,lod 6 and lod8 ,and organize the different files and folder cause all that it's more that to make a runway
