We have to do a little server maintenance that will take the forums off line for an about 2-3 hours. Right now we are planning for Sunday night 9:00 PM May 25
Hi Bob,
You either need the model source file or it's a new model. It only needs be a 'building' as far as CFS3 is concerned. I did it with the Zeros on Talcoban which are basically a shell.
I realize your looking for static wreckage as a permanent part of the scenery. In case you aren't already aware: This dated mod by "Charlie" would be more dynamic and allows custom wreckage from the stock p_47d_25 to appear for a time at the point of impact (sorry, I don't have a screenshot). I have all of the files if you want to reverse engineer them to see how it might apply to something custom made. It may also be possible to "mole" an aircraft model in the desired position with a texture alpha to simulate damage (?) without having to create a model from scratch.
From Charlie's Read Me: Well i just hope people do read the doc lol
Just copy the contents to the root of cfs3
ie....
For the record, this is what Charlie's mod looks like. He placed bits of the stock p_47d_25 around in a crash orientation as a test. Not very dramatic and once the fire burns out you don't really notice the wreck from the air, especially in the heat of combat. Obviously, any other aircraft would need a purpose built crash model. Would be interesting to see the larger wreck of a Ju-88 or B-17.
Is there something in Charlie's mod that makes crash sites persistent through multiple missions of a campaign?
It is possible to create a object that appears as a crater model that will appear at the site of bomb craters or aircraft crashes. It works by calling a crater decal the same way bombs do. The crater decal xdps are in the objects folder, and if you reference an m3d file for the crater model instead of the texture, the model will appear instead of a crater decal.
Is there going to be a consistent crash location with each successive mission? I wouldn't think so. I believe the wreckage disappears after several minutes but I haven't installed the mod until recently and haven't really studied the detailed engineering behind it yet. The file includes a bdp for the p_47d_25 aircraft folder. I'm not certain how this or the info contained in it plays a role. I haven't had time to put it in a hex editor to see what makes it tick. The crash model and appropriate files (xdp and bdp) are within a folder to be placed in the main Vehicles folder. I would like to upload it here at SOH but I'm not sure about the "legality" of doing that. I don't remember exactly where I got it from (been years ago) and there's no e-mail to contact.
