Buccaneer portover - Beautiful but...

vipgroup

SOH-CM-2024
A portover/conversion of the UKMil Buccaneer just popped up on flightsim.to. Of course it looks great, and I was very much looking forward to it. However, the brief flight I did with it showed that it needs more work in the flight model department. In the air, with throttles back at idle it kept on accelerating to around 510 knots and the only way of slowing it was deploying air brakes. If anyone else has a different experience, please report. Otherwise I encourage the uploader to keep working on it as it is a very much needed aircraft for RAF enthusiasts.

If you want to see what an older plane looks like in FS2024, then checking out a portover is fine.

But they're essentially broken. They crash VR, switches don't work, and the flight models are never comparable to native FS2024 planes.

There are *full ports* -- planes converted to full native FS2024 format from FSX/P3D -- that are fine. But these "portovers" -- run through the converter and then manually tweaked -- are just frustrating and half-arsed experiences. Witness the Storch a few weeks ago.

I don't begrudge the creation of these -- some people obviously like them -- but they're not my cuppa.

Agreed!

Same experience here. Nice looking aside from some missing gauges, but there is no way it was tested before it was uploaded. I touched down on the numbers of my local airport which has a 10,000' runway and the only way I could stop it was to end up in a ditch beyond the fenceline at the opposite end, lol

I also noticed that with the speed brakes deployed the nosewheel steering was inop, otherwise I might have been able to save it from the nose down in the ditch thingy. I do hope someone takes it under their wing and salvages this one. I was never a Buccaneer enthusiast but I actually like this airplane and would have kept it but for the glaring problems it has right now.

Always loved that airplane Mario, as you know. It would be a favorite as well in MSFS if that ever happens.

If nothing else, you can get it to have it sitting at random spots at whatever airport you happen to visit.

Thanks for the HU Kenneth and thanks for letting us know that it's been updated Noddy.

Chances are very slim indeed that we'll ever see a native one, so I'm definitely giving this one a try. One of the first jets I made. Airfix if I remember correctly.

Cheers,

Jan

On the download page, there's also a link to a UK veteran's charity the dev is supporting. I added a drop to that bucket.

Power setting much better but I still have no nosewheel steering. It states that the AP is functional but I found no way to activate. I could turn it on with the "Z" key, but beyond that, using the keystrokes I used in FSX/P3D. . .no joy!

Somewhere I read that the Bucc had no steerable nosewheel - kinda like the A-4 or A-5.
Whatever has been 'en vogue' in those days - it's sure different today......

Well, despite the update and the initial appearance that the runaway throttle problem had been fixed it didn't last long. After one flight the same problem returned and the nosewheel steering persists. I can't fathom a fighter not having the ability to steer, lol. I checked the [contactpoints] section and changed the setting from 90.0 to 45.0 ( always worked in FSX and P3D) but to no avail. Brakes did nothing either but I haven't tried using the throttles, however the fact that nothing is clickable makes that a bit more difficult. I'll continue to work with the airplane to see if I can resolve whether to keep it or not.

Well I gave in and downloaded this one; Blackburn Aircraft Limited used to be my local aircraft manufacturer here in Yorkshire, UK. I've created a native MSFS flight profile for it which cures most if not all the faults mentioned above, HOWEVER I'm sure there will be some things which can be improved upon further, for which I'm going to need your help i.e. there is an orange strobe in the middle of each exhaust nozzle for some reason - I'd like to know where they should be.
Progress so far:

Weight and balance reconfigured to MSFS standard.
Contact Points, steering and brakes reconfigured ditto.
Engines are now running and parking brake is on when starting on a runway.
Cockpit camera views improved (slightly).
Autopilot works with keyboard and/or PMS50 GTN750 Premium autopilot.

Sorry I can't make the cockpit clickable in any way, but if you'd like to try this mod and suggest improvements you can download it from my One Drive, to install it just unzip and move the "tiger's buccaneer mod" folder to your Community folder.
**NOTE** You DO need to install the original UKMil Buccaneer conversion first from https://flightsim.to/file/79236/ukmil-blackburn-buccaneer-s2-package-for-fsx-and-p3d-conversion

Just install over it?

Priller

Just install over it?

No, install along with it - you need the original UKMil Buccaneer AND this mod in your Community folder. The original shows in your aircraft menu exactly as before, you'll only notice the mod when you start your flight.

Excellent mod Tiger1962. Much nicer ride now, especially being able to taxi off the runway to a parking spot, lol. Trim was better, I just have to set up to be able to "slow the roll". It isn't a big deal but over time it will move you off your heading. I'll fix that and give her another go this evening.

One question though, the AP. . .I've tried using the keystrokes I used in FSX but those don't work. . .I searched online and found a list of all the functions for the AP keystrokes. . .none of those worked either. Can you give me some idea of what does work?

These commands should work, I have the PMS50 GTN750 and haven't had time to test them myself yet:

**NOTE** Autothrottle is NOT activated!
