ASOBO P-51 IMPROVEMENT MOD

Not exactly the right thread for this, but thought you all might like to know what's cooking.

I've been in contact with a current T-6 owner/operator who has been an invaluable resource in providing references for the coming 2020/2024 T-6 Improvement Mod.

So far we have managed to:

• Implement full CFD
• Implement full NPS (New Prop Physics)
• Tweaked prop inertia to improve shutdown behavior
• Implement full SBS (Soft Body Aerodynamics Simulation)
• Completely rewrite the FM/Engine.cfg as per real world operating parameters
• Fixed/Tweaked tailwheel steering animation
• Fixed MLG oleo stiffness
• Fixed landing gear static suspension compression
• Fixed wheel contact points
• Assigned correct lever to carb heat
• Staggered landing gear retract/extension time per IRL behavior on his T-6
• Revamped starter torque for realistic start up procedure

This is in addition to the new sounds, canopy animation, and visual improvements (dome spinner, Harvard gear doors) members of the Discord are aware of and have been testing.

I don't think I'm jumping the gun by stating that I do plan to make the same Improvements on the P-51 FM and Engine models.

Suffice to say, the T-6 is a whole new animal now, with lots more to come.

Happy flying!

Hi Randall,

Is this available only on the discord channel? Or do you plan on making it available elsewhere?

Cheers,

Jan

Hey Jan!

It will be available on fs.to, I've just been keeping the very early "alpha" grade work close to the chest.

I need to finish the sounds and fine tune some of the FM parameters, then I'll be comfortable releasing it on 2020 while continuing to develop things further.

Hey Randall, Thanks for your work on both the P-51 and the T-6. Could you post a link to your Discord channel? I'd like to follow the progress. Thanks

Mike

Reading the suggestions made on Randall’s discord, I saw that some people would have liked to see flames on the exhausts.
Randall, if you want to have this:

Send me a MP, it is quite simple to put in euvre.
It takes 3 cones per effect with 3 different flame texture and then animate these cones by playing on their size (scale animation). After that it is only necessary to add a little bit of XML code to display the effect in the desired circumstances.

PS: This racer is one of my projects that is on my desk and I need to finish. The outside is ready and the inside still needs to be textured.

It is something I'm investigating. There are existing nodes in the Asobo models for exhaust effects so I may be able to simply attach an FX to that. Remember, I'm under the restriction of not redistributing the MS/Asobo IP in order to stay in compliance with the usage rules, that means no modifying models. If you want to drop me a message here or Discord, feel free!

Hi Randall,

You say "that means no modifying models". Doesn't that rule out adding drop tanks, gunsights and the likes? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm just no modeller.

Cheers,

Priller

I believe that means you cannot modify any of the existing model, but you can add attachments to the existing model

What tankerguy said. We're not allowed to export an entire model with all the animations and such, but using the canopy as an example, I took the component pieces, made those into a standalone model, and "attached" that to the existing base model.

How's the T-6 MoD coming along Randall

It's coming along nicely! I really want to fix a couple of things before releasing it, but I may have to admit (temporary) defeat while I continue studying some things in the SDK. If that ends up being the case I'll probably be releasing it in the next week or so.

On the bug fix to-do at the moment:

  • New prop model has zero p-factor or torque until the tail lifts, despite performance numbers within 1% of "legacy" model.
  • Finish .wav sounds (not perfect, but better than default) - DEFINITELY will be done for release.
  • Fix flaps actuation to depict a true UP/NEUTRAL/DOWN system (this might be a sim limitation).

Sounds good - thank you. Did you come to a dead end on Miss Virginia in the end?

For now. All I know for certain is that there IS a way to do the fixes, just haven't quite figured out specifically how.

On the bright side, the prop artifacts on the 51A aren't a problem in 2024.

I can reliably fix it on a "per livery" basis, but then it relies on livery creators to implement OR make a package that can be installed to any existing livery. I certainly would prefer something that integrates with the airframe itself regardless of livery. It's quite a strange thing, dealing with the encryption.

Randall - Personally I'd be happy just to have a working "Miss Virginia" and not worry about any other liveries. Just my own view.
