Carenado ATR42-500 interCaribbean Repaint

I didn't get any offers from anyone to repaint this for me so I figured that I would just tough it out. There is a thread on here that I posted, I think that I have a download in the Resources too for the Carenado Beech D18 that I did from photos. That was about as much fun as this one. It's like a toothache. You remember it hurt a lot but just not how much until you get another one...LOL! I consider Carenado jigsaw puzzles, I mean paint kits like a toothache but wadda ya gonna do. If you buy a model from Carenado, you better decide which one of the repaints they give you are going to fly. I feel like that is their logic. We gave you 15 repaints, what else do you want???? Sorry the feeling is after four hours to accomplish this though I am pleased with it. Just really tired and eye strained. OK enough complaining...here is a screenshot in Model Converter X.

If anyone who has painted the Carenado ATR42 would like to step in and paint the interCaribbean texture on it for me I would really appreciate it. I consider this "so-called" paint kit to be the worst thing I have ever worked with in my entire 15 years of repainting all the way from FS9 days. I thought that iFly was difficult to use but it was a breeze compared to this. I am considering this subject closed unless someone would be willing to take the time to repaint it for ALL of us to share here. Nothing is correct IMO with it. I won't waste time here listing all the cons! I have this thread pegged to receive emails to responses. Thank you and I apologize for the rant.

I am just going to step back from this for a few days. I don't have any time to work on it until next Tuesday so that will be a good break for a while and then get back to trying it. Jan Kees sent me his paint kit he used when repainted the Carenado AT45 a few years ago (he is now MSFS) but the results this morning were no different than what I have. Nick Bottamer created one too but it's still the same mosaic. Have a great weekend.

Learning how to manipulate this paint kit is like learning Russian or Chinese, LOL! Very, very slowly I am deciphering just how to do what I want it to do from Photoshop into Model Converter X then back to Photoshop then.........Alignment is very difficult. It would have been SO much nicer if like Posky or Virtualcol they gave you a complete left and right side of the aircraft and where to cut it to paste into the paint kit. But they didn't and I want to fly this ATR from Carenado because no other except MSFS has all the systems working and I don't just want a simple flyer as generous as ATR45 right side.pngVirtualcol is that they provided for free or EVEN for such a low price for the "payware" version which I can't actually tell the difference except in the model layout. So now that the first color has been laid on its time to add the "deep cyan" shapes and then the tail. More here next week. For those of you old timers (like me) "same BAT time, same BAT channel".

Getting the hang of this FINALLY! Here is the left side with the Deep Cyan or French Blue depending on which logo color site swirl. I am quite pleased with it now I know how to do it with the Paintbrush/pen tool used in combination. I hope the right side comes out as well when I get back in the paintshop. It might not be tomorrow with church and for sure not Monday with too much to do. Left Side French Blue.png

Thanks for the encouragement!

I haven't done a lot of Carenado repaints but I thought that finding a Carenado paint kit was like finding rocking horse poop! A very rare thing. Normally they give you a plain white texture and then you have to use one of the 'layer effects' like 'overlay' or 'multiply' in PhotoShop to paint over the base layer but retain the lines and rivets etc. Not my preferred method of repainting that's for sure.

Regardless you are doing well and perseverance will get you through.

Thank you. You are very correct. It IS rare that they included a PSD of the two texture sheets. The "so called" paintkit is PSD jigsaw puzzle textures that match the textures. There ARE only two sheets of textures for the ATR42-500: fuselage/parts/tails called CAATECD_ext1 and CAATECD_ext2 which is the wings and horizontal stab plus parts. Yes they are still nightmares. I will have to open up some fully painted repaint files to identify the tiny parts and which color they need to be of the blues. Nick Bottamer generously put a paintkit on AVSIM that I found and downloaded. It contains a beautiful tail paintkit of the full piece with a mask for the rudder and vertical stab that will make this part for interCaribbean a breeze. He has a sheet that identifies the parts but it is slightly different than the texture sheet I found out too late so I will just use it for identity of the parts when the time comes to paint them.

Nick Bottamer's super labeling of all the parts:

you can see here the fun of repainting a Carenado ATR. LOL! Riddle me this, Batman, Why are the left and right nose sections different length as are the aft portions of the fuselage?

Whenever I mapped a model I made sure that every part had it's own space (no dumping multiple parts on the same area of the sheet) and that every part was identified for the end user. I started out as a repainter and when I started modelling I made sure that I mapped the model to make it as paint friendly as possible. I hate it when big name developers turn out models that are almost impossible to repaint. I had a military aircraft earlier this year that I wanted to do a camo repaint for but it turned out to be impossible because of the crazy mapping!

Riddle me this, Batman, Why are the left and right nose sections different length as are the aft portions of the fuselage?
Because the person who mapped the parts didn't match the scales on all the parts or 'dragged' the mesh when placing it the UVW map which stretched it slightly. The plane I mentioned above had the fuselage over 4 sheets but one of the middle sheets was mapped at about 102% in length (but not height) compared to the other sheets! :dizzy:

Lke I said above about iFly, that was the second payware that I bought for FS9. The first was Phoenix Simulations (PSS) Airbus 320. It was a really almost study level aircraft back then. I know because I purchased the full set of real Airbus training for pilots on CD and books I still have. Everything that they could make work under MS ACES limitations did. I didn't do any repaints for it because I got the repaint I wanted already done to match the DVD of a charter to Mykonos. I am frustrated with Google because I want the name of the airline, can't find the DVD and Google can't find it, phooey! Anyway, I found it 20 years ago. LOL! Another half hour and I really quit. It is lost in my memory and the internet's memory too. Now that I just finished the book I was reading 22:45 EDT I am going to bed it's been a long day and we have services every night this week for our Missions Conference.
