CS Sopwith Camel

It installs into MSFS2024, after navigating to the FS24 Community folder manually, under this file name: "ipcaptainsim-aircraft-i006".

It handles as you would expect a Sopwith Camel to handle in the air, the sounds and visuals are also great. There's an annoying (to me) creep forward at tickover on the ground, with a repeated bounce from the tailskid. Pilot has a baseball cap & headphones:

I love this thing. The visuals are absolutely exquisite, both the detail in the model and the detail of the textures. The flight model is also surprisingly accurate. Like the real thing, it has very effective elevators and rudder, while the ailerons are there mostly just to balance the rudder in a turn. And, like the real thing, you can't take your hands off the controls in flight, as it won't stay in a straight line for long. Also, true to the real thing, you're not going to get anywhere much faster than about 80-mph in cruise. The engine/airframe performance and flight behavior all seems very accurate. No trim and no brakes, but the tail skid will slow you down. Short bursts of power and full rudder deflection needed in order to turn while taxiing, but it does it. The sounds are from the MSFS Curtiss Jenny which does provide a vintage-era spit/sputter engine soundset that I think is quite suitable-enough. Really, the only thing I can critique is the fact that the spinning rotary engine should be just as blurred as the prop, when spinning, since they're both rotating at the same speed. Since it's not blurred, the engine looks static in screenshots even though it's spinning. That's just a pet-peeve of mine. For $13, though, I really cannot complain. I hope that Captain Sim continues their line of WWI aircraft, I think they're brilliant.

Yeah, it really feels like Captain Sim turned a corner recently. Their C-130 is quite nice, and it just got updated with new sounds, effects, and options. This little icon of WWI looks very nice. I'll probably pick it up.

Just need a good Rotary sound set now... The modelling & texturing is brilliant, some of the screenshots look like photos of actual planes & the FDE reports are all good!

I wonder if the sounds from this would work...
This was great in FSX, had an awesome sound set & the Castor oil smoke effect.

If you would like to stop the tailskid bouncing while on the ground, here are a few lines of text to replace the existing lines in your flight_model.cfg file, [CONTACT_POINTS] section:

static_pitch =14.206
static_cg_height =4.210

point.0 = 1, -13.080, 0.00, -1.5, 500, 0, 1.000, 90, 0.50, 2, 0.50, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1.0
point.1 = 1, 1.191, -2.55, -5.2, 750, 0, 1.192, 0, 0.55, 2, 0.55, 0, 0, 2, 0 ,0, 1.1
point.2 = 1, 1.191, 2.55, -5.2, 750, 0, 1.192, 0, 0.55, 2, 0.55, 0, 0, 3, 0, 0, 1.1

**** BACK UP YOUR EXISTING FLIGHT_MODEL.CFG FIRST!! ****

If you would also like to stop the plane creeping forward at tickover on the ground, these lines will reduce the tickover rpm only. Again, replace the existing lines in your engines.cfg [PISTON_ENGINE] section:

engine_mechanical_efficiency_table=0:0.6, 400:0.65, 700:0.72, 1100:0.72, 1350:0.65
engine_friction_table=-300:-20, 300:17, 500:20, 1000:20, 1200:25, 1400:30

manifold_efficiency_table=0:0.28, 1:0.99

**** BACK UP YOUR EXISTING ENGINES.CFG FIRST!! ****

I'd certainly be interested in a Bristol Fighter if they did one. I agree that Captain Sim has turned a corner - the Heinkel He 111 is great fun.

Do you know if their C-130 has had any significant flight model updates? I heard it wasn't very accurate before.

Someone over on the MSFS forum has said that swapping out soundset to the Bleriot payware sounds works really well & even has the BLIP swich sound effect working correctly as an instant blip, not a fade in/out. I am going to get this plane, the 3D modelling & texturing in VR are going to look amazing. I will try & source a soundset, maybe even get the Bleriot just for that part... After seeing a rotary powered replica Camel at an airshow here in OZ many years ago I have been intrigued by it & how it flies...

I bought the Camel last night, messed around with the sound files neither of which I was happy with, the FSX version doesn't seem to work correctly in MSFS, almost like the WAV files don't work in conjunction with each other the same as they did on FSX. The Bleriot is only a 3 cylinder engine so it lacks a bit of what the Camel rotary had in the sound dept. I also would like to see CaptainSim release an alternative flight model, it seems like they dumbed it down for the general simming community, The real plane has some wild gyroscopic & torque effects going on due to the rotary & it'd be great to see that implemented somehow... Maybe a clickspot in the cockpit to activate a different flight mode.
In VR its brilliant, the modelling & texturing are really well done... I highly recommend this plane if you have any interest in WW1 aircraft.
Please, please, please do a Fokker DR1.
