Martin Mars (Philippine) coming to Pima Air and Space Museum

9/24/05 Update...

Welp, after a long flight, disassembly and reassembly, the Philippine Mars has been moved to its final resting spot.

I truthfully learned more from the disassembly and reassembly of this Martin Mars than I ever did scouring through the books, magazines, photos, etc. that were available to the general public over the past few decades. I'm hoping many of these new images will be published in a new or revised publication, but truthfully, I don't think they will. And, I'm not sure where all the professional video coverage will end up.

Absolutely fabulous that this bird has been saved, if I was 20 years younger I would go there and see her for real.

Same here.

That said, I wonder if Pima intends to provide guided tours of the aircraft's interior or if they will eventually seal it up (including the windows) for exterior viewing only, like most of their other aircraft sitting out in the open. I notice that in many of the short videos of the reassembly work, a large towable AC unit, flexible ducts, etc. were required to work within the interior due to excessive summer heat. BC currently allows some access to the interior of the Hawaii Mars, but I'm not sure how long that will last.

The one thing I hope to resolve, once the dust settles, is which museum has ownership of the original construction drawings. I wish they would digitize these types of documents and release them to the public. I guess time, resources, and maybe legal issues may be involved in doing so. Still, I'd like to see these original construction drawings. I'd be interested to know if they have the drawings for the JRM-2 (Caroline Mars). This one had the larger and more powerful R-4360 engines. I'm thinking the Navy must have issued a specific Pilot's Handbook for that model, but I've yet to see any mention of one.
